Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to Disney’s 2019 The Lion King: its main story looks back at Mufasa’s youth, while a framing story has Rafiki tell that history to Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter. The films connect through their shared characters and the story of how Mufasa became the figure known in The Lion King.
Is Mufasa: The Lion King a prequel to The Lion King?
Yes. Disney describes Mufasa: The Lion King as a story told in flashbacks that follows Mufasa’s earlier life. It is set before the events of the 2019 The Lion King, whose story features Mufasa as Simba’s father and Scar as his brother. Disney’s page for the 2019 film lists James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar: Disney’s 2019 film page.
The film also connects past and present through its framing story. Rafiki recounts Mufasa’s legend to Kiara, who is identified as Simba and Nala’s daughter. That setup makes the prequel’s history a story being passed to the next generation, rather than a separate tale without ties to the Pride Lands.
How does Mufasa connect to the characters in The Lion King?
The clearest link is the return of familiar characters alongside a younger Mufasa and Taka. Disney’s cast announcement names the principal returning and new voice cast:

What does the prequel reveal about Mufasa’s origin?
Disney’s synopsis begins with Mufasa as an orphaned cub. He meets Taka, described as an heir to a royal bloodline, and the two become central to the earlier story. The contrast sets up the film’s origin premise: Mufasa begins outside the royal line, while Taka is born into it.

This is the supported connection to Mufasa’s later place in the Pride Lands story. The official synopsis establishes the premise and the pair’s meeting; it does not, by itself, explain every event behind Taka’s later identity as Scar. For an overview of how Disney presents the film in relation to the franchise, see its franchise announcement.
How does the prequel fit with the 2019 film?
The relationship is both chronological and narrative: Mufasa looks backward to Mufasa’s youth, while its Rafiki-and-Kiara framing connects that past to Simba’s family. The 2019 film, released July 19, 2019, presents the later Pride Lands story. Disney describes Mufasa as expanding on that film and bringing back familiar characters.

These sources establish the broad relationship, not a scene-by-scene continuity guide. The safest way to understand the connection is as an earlier chapter that adds an origin story to the world and characters viewers know from the 2019 film, without assuming that every detail is a direct explanation of the earlier film’s events.
