There is no fixed Spotify payment per stream. Spotify allocates royalties by each track’s share of streams in a market, then pays rights holders—not artists directly. Its latest cited benchmark says that in 2025, an artist who captured one in a million Spotify streams generated about $11,000. That is a company-reported global illustration, not a guaranteed 2026 rate or an artist’s take-home pay.
Why Spotify has no fixed per-stream rate
Spotify describes its system as streamshare allocation, rather than a set price for each play. A stream does not earn the same amount in every country or month: the royalty pool in a market depends on subscription and music-advertising revenue there, and each recording receives a share of that pool based on its proportion of streams.
Spotify says roughly two-thirds of the money generated from music goes to the rights holders for artists and songwriters. It reported more than $11 billion in payouts in 2025, its highest annual total to that point. These are Spotify Loud & Clear figures, not an independent audit.
What Spotify’s $11,000 benchmark means
Spotify’s streamshare explanation and payment FAQ say that in 2025, an artist capturing one in a million of all Spotify streams generated about $11,000. The figure illustrates how a share of a global royalty pool can translate into revenue; it is not a posted price for a million plays.

It should not be treated as a 2026 rate, an estimate for a particular artist, or a promise that one million streams by one artist will generate that amount. The benchmark is tied to 2025 and a proportion of all global streams. An artist’s country mix and the size of each local pool affect the gross amount attributable to their recordings.
How streamshare is calculated
- Spotify generates revenue. Its royalty pool draws on Premium subscriptions and music advertising on Spotify Free.
- A pool is determined for each market. The relevant subscription and music-advertising revenue in a country contributes to that market’s pool.
- Streams are measured by country and month. A track’s streams are compared with all streams in that country during that month.
- The proportional share determines the allocation. The track’s share of local streams determines its share of that market’s royalty pool.
- Rights holders receive the money. They then pay artists and songwriters according to their agreements.
Because allocation is market-specific, the same number of plays can lead to different gross royalty allocations depending on where and when those plays occur. Dividing a platform’s total payout by its total streams can produce an average for a stated period, but that retrospective average is not a contractual rate for each play.

Who actually receives the money?
Spotify says, “We don’t pay artists or songwriters directly, we pay rights holders, who then pay you based on your agreement with them.” The rights holder may be a label, distributor, publisher, or another party, depending on the recording and rights involved. What the artist ultimately receives depends on the applicable agreement, including any relevant label, distributor, publisher, or co-writer terms. Spotify’s public figures do not establish a universal contract split.
That distinction is why a gross amount associated with streams is not necessarily the performer’s net payment. A distributor may be part of the payment path, but its involvement does not change Spotify’s streamshare calculation or guarantee a particular payout.

Spotify’s 1,000-stream recording-royalty threshold
Spotify’s policy says a track must have at least 1,000 streams in the previous year to generate recording royalties on Spotify. This is a threshold for recording royalties; it should not be read as a complete description of publishing royalties or every payment arrangement.
Spotify says the policy does not change the total royalty pool or increase its profit; it redirects money. Its policy FAQ reports that 99.5% of streams are on tracks meeting the threshold and that 3.5 million artists had at least one qualifying song in 2025. These are Spotify’s reported figures.

A single per-stream number can be a useful shorthand only when its limits are clear. It is usually an average calculated by dividing a total payout by a total stream count, not the amount Spotify promises for every play.

- Check the time period and geography behind the calculation.
- Find out whether the amount represents a platform payout to rights holders or an artist’s net receipt.
- Look for the stream volume and payment pool used to calculate the average.
- Do not assume that the same rate applies across markets, months, recordings, or contracts.
