Who may vote in that final round depends on the category. Some categories instead use a one-step jury process, with no nominees.
This explains the Academy’s 2026 Primetime competition; other awards that use the Emmy name may follow different procedures.
How the Primetime Emmy selection process works
- Eligible entries are submitted under the season’s rules. The Academy sets the eligible period and category requirements. For the 2026 competition, the eligibility period ran from June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026. See the 2026 rules and calendar.
- Eligible members vote for nominees. National Active members cast ballots during the nominations round. The Academy says members vote in categories related to their peer-group specialties.
- Nominees advance to a final vote or judging. In categories using the two-round process, eligible National Active members vote or judge to select winners. The category determines who can participate and how the final evaluation is conducted.
- Accountants tabulate the votes. If a final-round vote is tied, the rules break the tie by comparing the tied nominees’ relative voter approval on the first-round nominating ballot.
The Television Academy’s rules say Emmy voting is intended to reflect an individual voter’s opinion rather than an ad-hoc group’s mandate. The rule appears in the discussion of quid pro quo and block voting.
Who votes for the Emmys?
For the 78th Emmy Awards in 2026, the Television Academy says only National Active members may vote. Associate, Los Angeles Area, Faculty and Student members are ineligible. The Academy describes itself as having over 28,000 members across 31 specialized peer groups; those are the Academy’s figures, as stated on its FAQ page observed October 8, 2026.

Why voting differs by category
Program categories
For program categories, the rules allow members from all peer groups to vote, with exceptions for animated and documentary program categories. This means the final-round electorate can be broader than the specialty group associated with a particular program.
Individual-achievement categories
Individual-achievement awards generally use peer judging: eligible judges come from the relevant peer group unless a category’s rules provide otherwise. Peer groups decide whether their final judging uses a yes-or-no assessment of whether an entry is “worthy of an Emmy” or a single vote for the top selection.

Which categories use juries instead of nominees?
Some categories use a juried process rather than the standard nominations-then-final-round route. In the Academy’s 2026 announcement, relevant peer-group professionals screen entries and deliberate openly. A jury category can award one Emmy, several Emmys or none; it does not necessarily produce a nominee list. The Academy describes this as a one-step evaluation and voting procedure. When did voting take place for the 2026 Primetime Emmys?
The Academy’s 2026 calendar lists nominations voting from June 11 through June 22, and final-round voting from August 17 through August 26. It lists the Creative Arts ceremonies for September 5 and 6 and the NBC telecast for September 14. These dates describe the 2026 award year, not a schedule for future ceremonies; the calendar says dates may change.

How to interpret an Emmy result
- A nomination is not a win. In categories using the two-round process, the nomination ballot selects the nominees; the final round determines the winner.
- There is no single electorate or ballot method for every category. Program categories, individual-achievement categories and juried categories can follow different procedures.
- The official result is the record to consult. The rules say accountants tabulate votes and winners are announced at the Creative Arts Awards and telecast. The winner press release is definitive if a nominee roster changes.
- Check the rules for the specific award year. Eligibility, voting rules and dates can change; the 2026 process is a dated example.
The Television Academy FAQ calls the Emmy “a symbol of peer recognition.” That description captures the award’s stated basis, while the category rules determine how that recognition is expressed in votes or jury decisions.
