Lux connects to the Toymaker through the Pantheon of Gods and a laugh that immediately alerts the Doctor: when Mr Ring-a-Ding reveals himself as Lux, he laughs “just like the Toymaker and Maestro,” according to the official Doctor Who episode guide. The episode identifies Lux as the God of Light, but does not establish that he and the Toymaker are related or explain how they rank against each other.
Who is Lux in Doctor Who?
Lux is Lux Imperator, the God of Light and a member of the Pantheon of Gods. He is introduced in “Lux,” season 2, episode 2, written by Russell T Davies and first released on 19 April 2025.
The episode takes the Doctor and Belinda to Miami in 1952. In an abandoned cinema, a cartoon character steps out of a film projection. The projectionist, Reginald Pye, has been feeding the cartoon with light from old films in exchange for a filmic recreation of his late wife. The official Mr Ring-a-Ding character page says Lux can manipulate projector light, trap the Doctor and Belinda inside a two-dimensional cartoon world, and seek the Doctor’s regeneration energy to build a more substantial body.
What is the connection to the Toymaker?
The clearest connection is the laugh. The official episode guide says: “To the Doctor’s terror, Mr Ring-a-Ding laughs just like the Toymaker and Maestro – revealing himself as Lux, the God of Light, and a member of the Pantheon of Gods!” The guide presents the laugh as the cue that makes the Doctor recognize a connection, while identifying Lux as part of the Pantheon.

That is a meaningful link, but it is not a full explanation of Lux’s relationship to the Toymaker. The official episode and character pages reviewed do not identify Lux as the Toymaker’s sibling, child, creation, servant or superior, nor do they set out a hierarchy between them.
Does the Toymaker outrank Lux?
The official Toymaker character page describes him as an immortal being who can create entire universes and manipulate things within his world. That description establishes the scale of the Toymaker’s abilities; it does not establish that he commands Lux or ranks above him. Likewise, Lux’s membership in the Pantheon and his formidable light-based powers do not establish that he ranks above the Toymaker.
