How Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” Crossed Language Barriers

“Despacito” crossed borders through its musical feel, streaming and a Justin Bieber remix. Its global reach was real; claims that it erased cultural barriers need more care.

“Despacito” became a global hit not because listeners needed to understand every Spanish lyric, but because its rhythm and feel connected across borders—and because streaming, YouTube and a Justin Bieber remix helped it travel. The evidence shows extraordinary cross-language listening and chart reach; it does not prove that the song erased cultural barriers or changed attitudes.

How did “Despacito” become a global hit if it was in Spanish?

Luis Fonsi has said he did not set out to make a crossover record. He and songwriter Erika Ender wrote the song on guitar, aiming for a fun, uptempo track with a Latin sound. Fonsi described the Puerto Rican cuatro as part of its musical palette and Daddy Yankee, also from Puerto Rico, as a collaborator.

In an interview with Official Charts, Fonsi said listeners connected with the sound even when they did not understand the lyrics: “they’re just vibing with the sound and the feel of it.” That is a description of how he saw audiences respond, not evidence that every listener understood—or wanted to understand—the words.

What did the remix change?

Dimension Original Remix
Language and vocals Spanish-language song by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. Justin Bieber sang the chorus in Spanish and added a new verse.
How it developed Released in January 2017; Fonsi recalled it gaining traction in Latin markets before spreading across Europe and then to the UK and US. Bieber heard the song while touring Colombia and asked to make a remix, according to Fonsi.
Fonsi’s assessment He described the original as a song built for a Latin sound, not a planned crossover. He said the remix took the song to another level and opened new doors for him and Daddy Yankee.

The remix brought a major English-language pop star into a Spanish-language hit without replacing its Spanish chorus. Fonsi credited it with expanding the song’s reach, but the available figures below generally combine the original and remix; they do not isolate how much of the success each version generated.

How did streaming and YouTube help it travel?

Streaming and video platforms made the track readily available across markets. Their dated milestones show the scale of its reach, although the figures are snapshots from 2017 and 2018—not current totals.

  • July 19, 2017: Universal Music Group reported more than 4.6 billion combined streams for the original and remix, six months after release. The company’s announcement quoted Fonsi calling streaming “a connector for audiences worldwide”; this is the label’s reported figure and Fonsi’s view of the platform’s role.
  • August 4, 2017: YouTube for Artists reported that the video had reached 3,000,730,629 views, 204 days after upload, averaging 14.5 million views per day since upload at that point. The platform listed audiences in Mexico and Brazil as well as Italy, France, Indonesia, India, Israel and Egypt.
  • By April 2018: IFPI’s Global Music Report 2018 said the original and remix together had accumulated 7.5 billion streams and views: 1.9 billion Spotify streams and 5.6 billion YouTube views. The report said the song had topped charts in 47 countries.

These platform and industry figures establish exceptional distribution and market reach. They do not, by themselves, explain why any particular listener pressed play or establish how much listeners understood the lyrics.

Did people understand the lyrics—and did the song really break language barriers?

Fonsi’s account supports a careful answer: some people connected with the song’s sound and feel even without understanding its lyrics. Its popularity is a striking example of a Spanish-language track finding listeners in places where Spanish is not the dominant language. Neither the chart positions nor view and stream totals measure language comprehension.

A cultural analysis by Petra R. Rivera-Rideau, an assistant professor of American Studies at Wellesley College, published by PBS American Experience in August 2017, adds an important qualification. “Crossover” has often been framed as Latin artists moving into an English-language mainstream—as if they must cross a bridge to reach broader audiences. Bieber singing Spanish on the remix complicates that familiar direction, but Rivera-Rideau cautions that streaming or singing along to a Spanish-language song does not necessarily mean listeners have embraced the culture that created it.

So “broke language barriers” is best understood as shorthand for wide cross-border listening, not proof that language stopped mattering, that every listener understood the song, or that one hit produced lasting cultural change. The sources establish audience reach and Fonsi’s account of listener response; they do not establish those broader outcomes.
