How Many Cuss Words Can Be in a PG-13 Movie?

The MPA publishes specific guidance for harsher sexually derived words, but no universal maximum for every kind of profanity in a PG-13 movie.

There is no fixed published maximum for all cuss words in a PG-13 movie. The Motion Picture Association’s 2018 summary of its guidance says one use of a harsher sexually derived word as an expletive initially calls for at least PG-13; more than one typically calls for R, subject to a narrow exception. The current MPA PG-13 page does not give a general profanity quota.

What the MPA says about harsher sexually derived words

The specific count guidance concerns a category of harsher sexually derived words, not every swear, insult, or profanity. In its 2018 summary of ratings guidance, the Motion Picture Association says that a film’s single use of one of these words “though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating.” MPA, “G is for Golden: The MPAA Film Ratings at 50” (2018)

  • One use as an expletive: The published summary says it initially requires at least PG-13.
  • More than one as an expletive: This typically requires R, but the Rating Board may allow PG-13 if a special two-thirds majority finds the context or inconspicuous use appropriate.
  • One used in a sexual context: The same summary says even one requires at least R.

This is guidance, not a guaranteed quota. It does not establish that exactly one is always allowed, or that every PG-13 film is subject to a simple word-count ceiling.

Does that rule cover every kind of cuss word?

No. The one-use and multiple-use guidance is specifically about harsher sexually derived words. The MPA’s current-facing PG-13 explanation says the category can include language beyond what is permitted at PG while remaining below R, but it does not enumerate a maximum for all profanity. Mild swearing and other language therefore cannot be assigned a universal PG-13 count from these published statements.

Why a word count cannot predict a movie’s rating

The U.S. MPA system is administered by the Classification and Rating Administration. Its raters watch each film in its entirety and consider its elements in context before voting on a rating and descriptor. Language is one factor among several, alongside violence, sex, nudity, drugs, smoking, and themes. MPA, Resources & FAQs

The descriptor gives parents a reason for the rating: for example, “language” signals that language was among the content considerations. It is more useful than trying to infer a film’s rating from an assumed profanity tally.

How to check a particular movie

  1. Look up the movie’s rating in the MPA’s film ratings information or on its U.S. release listing.
  2. Read the accompanying descriptor, which identifies the content cited for the rating.
  3. Use the rating and descriptor as a guide rather than treating them as a transcript or an exact count of words.

This answer applies to the U.S. MPA rating system. Other countries use their own movie classification systems, so the same language does not necessarily receive the same rating elsewhere.
