How John Cena Learned Mandarin—and What He Actually Regrets

John Cena learned Mandarin for WWE’s China ambitions. His later regret centers on the failed business strategy and his 2021 Taiwan remark, not on learning the language itself.

John Cena learned Mandarin as part of WWE’s effort to build a global presence in China. He later called that business strategy a failure and took responsibility for a serious mistake during the 2021 promotion of Fast & Furious 9. But the available reporting does not show that he regrets learning the language itself.

Why did John Cena learn Mandarin?

His reported motivation was professional: WWE wanted to expand in China. A 2026 account by Watch Your Tones attributes to a 2017 Straits Times interview Cena’s explanation: “I started wanting to learn Mandarin to get our global company to be a true global company.” The same article quotes him later describing the business effort as “eight years of labor, failing.” Those remarks point to disappointment with the company strategy, not necessarily with the language study.

How did he study Mandarin?

Watch Your Tones reports that Cena’s study was sustained and structured: he used flashcards, listened to Mandarin media, worked with a private tutor, and spent time in China. The article also says he used Mandarin in press appearances. These are details from that secondary account; the sources cited here do not independently verify his precise routine or how fluent he became.

The account describes years of work, including five years of study by 2017 and “close to a decade” overall. It also recounts Cena’s phrase “eight years of labor.” Because these figures come through the same secondary article and reflect different descriptions of the period, they should not be treated as a precise, independently confirmed timeline.

What happened during the Fast & Furious 9 promotion?

In 2021, while promoting F9, Cena said Taiwan would be the “first country” to see the film. The remark drew backlash in China. Cena then apologized in Mandarin in a video posted on Weibo, as reported at the time by Vanity Fair. Taiwan is self-ruled, while Beijing claims it as part of China; that political dispute is central context for why the wording provoked a response.

How has Cena explained the mistake?

In a 2025 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Cena said he had not reviewed the Mandarin teleprompter copy after a long promotional day. Fightful’s December 2025 account and transcription reports that he acknowledged the copy identified Taiwan as a country and described the fallout as difficult in China and at home.

He framed the lesson as a gap between speaking a language and understanding its cultural and political context: “My mistake was, just because you know the language, doesn’t mean you know the culture.” He also rejected the suggestion that the incident was not his fault: “I do appreciate you saying, ‘It’s not your fault.’ That’s not true. It was my fault.” Both quotes are transcribed by Fightful from the 2025 appearance.

Does John Cena regret learning Mandarin?

The headline’s wording can make it sound as if Cena regrets studying Mandarin. The cited accounts support a narrower conclusion: he called the China business effort a failure and described the Taiwan episode as his mistake and a painful lesson. They do not establish that he said he regretted learning Mandarin itself. His reflection instead emphasizes that language ability alone cannot substitute for cultural and political understanding.
