The adult animated comedy follows God and the Devil in the bodies of neighboring cats, with a dysfunctional human family caught in the mix. Netflix announced the series alongside a mobile game in 2022; the nine-episode show arrived in 2024.
Netflix announced a game and a series together
On 18 April 2022, Netflix announced an exclusive mobile version of Exploding Kittens and an adult animated comedy based on the card game. Netflix described it as the first time it had launched a mobile game and television series from the same franchise. The series was initially planned for 2023. Netflix’s announcement also introduced its central comic setup: God and the Devil arrive on Earth in the bodies of house cats.
The accompanying mobile game retained the card game’s draw-and-avoid structure and added two exclusive cards. Radar revealed the location of the nearest Exploding Kitten in the deck; Flip Flop reversed the order of the cards. Netflix said series-themed cards and mechanics would be added later. The announcement described the game as available to Netflix members without extra fees or in-app purchases; those were the terms of the 2022 offer, not a statement about current availability or pricing.
Why the show tells a new story
The card game creates suspense through a simple loop: draw cards while trying not to draw an Exploding Kitten. That mechanism supplies a memorable premise, but not a continuous plot with characters and conflicts that can sustain a series. Matthew Inman, the game’s co-creator and a showrunner, put the distinction plainly: “When I came up with the idea for this show, I abandoned any hope of trying to turn the card game itself directly into a series.”
#1 Best Overall
- In this family card game, draw cards and try to avoid the dreaded Exploding Kitten! Use strategic action cards to skip your turn, shuffle the deck, or defuse the Kitten with laser pointers or catnip sandwiches. The last player standing wins!
- Designed for 2-5 players, ages 7 and up, Exploding Kittens is great for kids, teens, and adults alike. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or want a casual game to break the ice, this easy-to-learn game is perfect for bringing everyone together.

- Includes 56 cards illustrated by The Oatmeal (each featuring a hilarious cartoon with characters such as Tacocat, Rainbow-Ralphing Cat and All-Seeing Goat Wizard) and an instruction manual (that you’ll probably skim).
- Our Story: One of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, the hilarious characters, thoughtful design and gameplay simple enough for a good time but complex enough for ultimate replayability, Exploding Kittens has taken the world by storm, with millions of copies sold and a global fanbase.
Instead, the show builds a story around God, fired and sent to Earth in a cat’s body, and the Devil—also described as the Antichrist—living nearby as another cat. God moves in with a dysfunctional family, giving the supernatural rivalry a human setting. The adaptation keeps the franchise’s irreverence and explosive-cat identity while creating its own characters and ongoing conflict; it is not a dramatization of particular card-game rounds or rules.
Inman said the team included Easter eggs and references to other games in the franchise for existing fans. Netflix’s July 2024 feature says viewers do not need to know the card game to enjoy the series. The physical Exploding Kittens card game is an optional way to encounter the source material, not homework for watching the show.

- Play It Anywhere: Great for family game nights, a party with friends, or accompanying your travel games you take on the go!
- 10 Years of Chaos: What started as a ridiculous Kickstarter has exploded (literally) into a global phenomenon. Millions of copies later, Exploding Kittens remains the go-to party card game and funny family game for anyone who likes their game night a little unhinged.
Who made the series, and when did it arrive?
Netflix credits Matthew Inman and Shane Kosakowski as creators and showrunners. Executive producers include Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment; Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping for Chernin Entertainment Group; and franchise creator Elan Lee alongside Inman. The key voice cast includes Tom Ellis, Sasheer Zamata, Suzy Nakamura, Mark Proksch, Ally Maki, and Kenny Yates. Netflix’s Media Center listing describes the series as an adult animated comedy.
The announced 2023 release window did not hold. Netflix’s release-day feature, dated 12 July 2024, says the series is streaming, and its official title page lists nine episodes from 2024. The same 2024 Netflix feature reports that more than 35 million copies of the game had been sold as of that publication. A 2022 Netflix announcement had described more than 18 million games sold; these are figures reported at different dates, not a current sales total.
