The achievement was a defining recognition of his performance as Charlie Allnut—not the first acting Oscar, but a landmark moment in the career of an actor strongly associated with hard-edged screen roles.
What Oscar did Humphrey Bogart win?
Bogart won the Academy Award for Actor, now commonly called Best Actor, for The African Queen (1951). The Academy’s official 24th Academy Awards record confirms the winner, film, nominees and ceremony date.
The ceremony took place on Thursday, March 20, 1952, at the RKO Pantages Theatre. It honored films released in 1951, so the film’s release year and the award ceremony year are different.
Who were the other Best Actor nominees?
The Academy listed four other nominees alongside Bogart:
#1 Best Overall
| Nominee | Film |
|---|---|
| Marlon Brando | A Streetcar Named Desire |
| Montgomery Clift | A Place in the Sun |
| Arthur Kennedy | Bright Victory |
| Fredric March | Death of a Salesman |
The official result establishes who won, but it does not provide vote totals or explain voters’ reasoning. The record supports describing this as Bogart’s win over a field that included Brando; it does not support claims about an upset, vote splitting or a particular campaign.
Why was the win a turning point for Bogart?
Bogart’s award recognized his performance as Charlie Allnut, a rough, unshaven riverboat captain whose surface bluster gives way to decency and courage. That role made a striking vehicle for an actor known for tough, guarded characters: the performance lets the audience see goodness emerge without making Allnut polished or conventionally heroic.

The Humphrey Bogart Estate biography quotes a New York Times critic calling it “very likely the best performance of his long career,” and praising Bogart’s ability to bring out the goodness beneath Allnut’s crude exterior. The Estate page does not identify the reviewer or give the review’s date, so the quotation is best understood with that attribution rather than attached to a named critic.
The award’s place in Bogart’s career is also reflected in a line attributed to him by the Estate: “The best way to survive an Oscar is to never try to win another one.” He went on to joke that he hoped never to be nominated again, preferring “meat-and-potato roles” to chasing another prize. These remarks appear in the Estate’s biography of Bogart.

Was Bogart the first actor to win an Oscar?
No. Bogart was not the first person to win an acting Oscar, and his 1952 Best Actor award was not a first-of-its-kind competitive acting award. The Academy identifies Hattie McDaniel as the first Black person nominated for and awarded a competitive Academy Award: she won for her supporting performance in Gone with the Wind at the 1940 ceremony.
The Academy’s historical account of McDaniel’s award also records that the ceremony was held in the segregated Cocoanut Grove and that McDaniel and her guest were seated apart from the other nominees. That context matters when describing Oscar history: Bogart’s win was significant for his own career, but it should not be framed as the Academy’s first acting milestone.
