Carrie Underwood’s studio recording of “How Great Thou Art” is track eight on My Savior, her first studio gospel album, released March 26, 2021. It is distinct from her earlier live duet with Vince Gill and the later concert performance on My Savior: LIVE From The Ryman.
Which album features Carrie Underwood’s studio version?
“How Great Thou Art” appears as the eighth of 13 tracks on My Savior, released March 26, 2021. The track follows “Oh How I Love Jesus” and precedes “Because He Lives.” Underwood described the album as a collection of traditional gospel hymns she grew up singing. She co-produced and arranged the project with David Garcia, with musicians including Buddy Greene, Mac McAnally, Gordon Mote and Brett James.
Underwood said the hymn was an easy choice for the album, calling it one of her favorites and noting the personal history of performing it with Vince Gill before revisiting it for My Savior. Her comments appear in Apple Music’s album commentary.

Where can you watch Carrie Underwood sing the hymn?
Underwood’s site has an “Official Performance Video” page dated April 6, 2021. For a concert-format performance, the hymn is also included in My Savior: LIVE From The Ryman, released on DVD. Retail listings and streaming availability can vary by region and change over time, so confirm the current listing with the relevant service or retailer.
What is the hymn’s history?
Underwood’s recording is a version of a hymn with a long history, not a song first written for My Savior. The Stuart Hine Trust traces its roots through a Russian hymn and a German hymn to Carl Boberg’s Swedish poem “O Store Gud,” first published in 1886. The Trust says Stuart Hine published the hymn in his Russian Gospel magazine Grace and Peace in 1949. Its account also quotes Hine describing the first three English verses as arising line by line from experiences in the Carpathian Mountains, with the fourth written later in England. The Stuart Hine Trust’s history and rights information reports more than 1,600 recordings and billions of streams as figures given by its CIO in 2024; the page does not describe an independent audit or a precise counting method.

The Stuart Hine Trust says “How Great Thou Art!” remains in copyright until March 2059 and directs permission requests to the relevant regional administrator.
