The 2025 Paramount merger turned that position into control of a legacy media group; Skydance’s October 6, 2026 announcement that its Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition had closed marked a much larger expansion. The phrase “million-dollar empire” is a headline, not a verified measure of Ellison’s personal wealth.
What does “empire” mean in this story?
It describes the growth of Skydance and the media businesses it came to control, not a documented valuation of David Ellison’s personal assets. The distinction matters because film grosses, company valuations, transaction funding and an individual’s wealth are different measures.
Skydance’s leadership biography says films associated with Ellison have earned nearly $10 billion in global box-office gross. That is a company-published career figure; the page does not explain its calculation, and gross receipts are not the same as profit or personal net worth. The reviewed sources do not establish Ellison’s current net worth or give a precise account of Larry Ellison’s early investment in Skydance.
How did Skydance grow before it owned Paramount?
An early venture with a difficult start
The dates in the available accounts differ. The Associated Press says Ellison launched Skydance in 2006, when he was 23. Skydance’s official leadership biography says he founded Skydance Media in 2010. Neither source explains the corporate distinction between those dates, so they should not be collapsed into a single founding date.

The early film Flyboys was a commercial failure, according to the Associated Press. That setback is an important part of the company’s history: Skydance’s later position was built through a succession of projects and relationships, not a run of guaranteed hits.
Partnerships created a route to scale
Rather than immediately owning a major studio, Skydance worked with established entertainment companies, financing and producing projects alongside them. In its July 2024 transaction announcement, Skydance and Paramount described their relationship as a 15-year partnership. The Associated Press likewise characterized Skydance’s growth as a progression through partnerships and financing before it moved to acquire control of a legacy media company.

The model gave Skydance access to major productions and distribution relationships while it built a slate and industry credibility. Its later work included Mission: Impossible films, television projects and Top Gun: Maverick. The Associated Press reported that Top Gun: Maverick surpassed $1 billion at the box office. Those successes help explain Skydance’s growing position, but the sources do not establish that any one film financed the later acquisitions.
What did the Paramount transaction change?
On July 7, 2024, Skydance and Paramount announced a two-step agreement. An investor group identified as the Ellison family and RedBird Capital Partners would first acquire National Amusements, Paramount’s controlling shareholder; Skydance and Paramount Global would then merge. Skydance announced completion of the merger in August 2025.

The announced sums describe different parts of a group-backed corporate transaction, not a personal check written by David Ellison.

The $4.75 billion Skydance valuation and the approximately $28 billion enterprise value for New Paramount are not interchangeable: one refers to Skydance in the share consideration, the other to the combined company’s transaction enterprise value. The reviewed sources do not provide a precise breakdown of Ellison’s personal contribution to the Paramount transaction.

At announcement, David Ellison said the group was “committed to energizing the business and bolstering Paramount with contemporary technology, new leadership and a creative discipline.” That was his stated intention in July 2024, not proof that those goals had been achieved.

On October 6, 2026, Skydance announced that its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery had closed and that the combined company would operate under the Skydance name. The release described a portfolio spanning Paramount, Warner Bros., CBS, HBO and CNN, as well as HBO Max, Paramount+, Pluto TV, CBS Sports and TNT Sports.

In the same announcement, Skydance said the combined company had nearly $70 billion in revenue and described $47 billion in new equity investment in Class B common stock for the transaction. These are company-reported figures in the context of the October 2026 deal announcement, not measures of Ellison’s personal fortune.
Company commitments are not completed results
Skydance said it was committing to release at least 30 theatrical films annually, with a minimum 45-day theatrical window, and set a target of at least $6 billion in run-rate synergies within three years. These are company commitments and forward-looking targets stated at closing; they should not be read as a record of output already delivered or savings already achieved.
How the business-building sequence fits together
Ellison’s rise is best understood as a shift in how Skydance participated in the industry: first building a production business, then scaling through partnerships and a broader slate, then moving from working alongside major media companies to owning them. The company’s setbacks and successes sit alongside that deal-making history; neither box-office gross nor transaction size alone tells the whole story.
