Tara Davis and Hunter Woodhall met in 2017 at the Simplot Games, an indoor track meet in Pocatello, Idaho. After Hunter finished a 400-meter race, Tara approached him and offered him a hug. They kept in touch, met again at another meet, and later began dating.
Where and when did they first meet?
Their first encounter was at the 2017 Simplot Games in Pocatello. In a 2024 account, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) says Hunter had just run the 400 meters when Tara walked onto the track to speak to him. A February 2026 report by EastIdahoNews also places the meeting at the Simplot Games and recounts Tara’s memory of approaching him after the race.

Why did Tara approach Hunter?
Tara recalled noticing Hunter and thinking he was cute. In an IPC interview published in 2024, she described her impulse to approach him: “I don’t know why I have to do this, but I have to hug you.” The IPC’s account of the encounter similarly says she offered him a hug after his race.
Hunter said he was initially unsure what to make of the approach after running a 400, but he knew who Tara was and felt there was something special about her, according to the same IPC interview.

How did their first meeting turn into a relationship?
The hug at the Simplot Games was the beginning of their story, not the start of a formal date. They stayed in touch through social media and saw each other again at the Arcadia Invitational, according to the IPC. Their connection developed as a friendship before they began dating.
A 2021 Good Morning America profile says they started dating several months after meeting. The IPC also says they began dating before college, distinguishing that later step from their first meeting in 2017.

How have they described the encounter since?
Looking back at the meeting during a public Q&A at the Simplot Games in 2026, Hunter called it “the best day of my life,” EastIdahoNews reported. The remark reflects how he remembers that first encounter; their relationship took shape over the months that followed.
