Jeff Goldblum met Emilie Livingston at an Equinox gym in Los Angeles in 2011. She was conditioning for aerial performance on monkey bars when Goldblum approached and asked about her exercises and whether she performed. Livingston gave him her number and told him where she would be performing that night; he went to see her.
What was Emilie Livingston doing when Jeff Goldblum approached her?
Livingston was training on monkey bars, doing aerial-conditioning moves she described as “skin the cats” and “meat-hooks.” She later recalled going to the West Hollywood Equinox early on August 26 after hearing that her sister, who lived in Norway, had given birth. In her account, Goldblum looked up at her and asked what she was doing and about her performances. She did not recognize him as a well-known actor.
Livingston was not staging a demonstration or taking part in a planned introduction. She had a background in rhythmic gymnastics and aerial performance, and had represented Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympics before working as an aerialist, contortionist and dancer.
How did their first conversation turn into a date?
Livingston says she gave Goldblum her phone number and the location of her nightclub performance that evening. He attended. A few days later, she went to see him perform piano with his jazz band. She joined him onstage for an improvised contortion performance, making their early connection a two-way exchange of performances.

Goldblum later described noticing her across the room and walking over. In a 2016 Parade interview, he said: “I met her at the gym. She was working out, just by herself, focused, not showing off. I was immediately thrilled by her and walked over.” In an account reported by ELLE, he identified the location as “Equinox on Sunset Blvd., the gym.”

The sources place their first meeting in 2011 and report that they married in 2014. The exact day is less certain: Livingston recalled August 26 but did not specify the year, while the account dating the meeting to 2011 does not supply a day and month. It is therefore not established that they met on August 26, 2011.
