He was 24 and driving a Porsche toward a race in Salinas when it collided with a Ford driven by Donald Turnupseed; Dean’s passenger, mechanic Rolf Wuetherich, was seriously injured but survived.
How the collision happened
The Los Angeles Times report published the next day, citing the California Highway Patrol, placed the collision at the junction of State Highway 41 and U.S. 466 near Cholame. It reported that Turnupseed was traveling east and turned left as Dean’s Porsche approached, resulting in a nearly head-on collision. Dean was headed to road races in Salinas.
Later coverage identifies Dean’s car as a Porsche 550 Spyder and the junction as routes 466—now Highway 46—and 41. A 2010 Times obituary of responding CHP officer Ernie Tripke recalls Turnupseed’s account of the turn: “He said he was making his turn. He just didn’t see Dean coming until the last, split second, and it was too late.” That is a later recollection reported by a newspaper, not a verbatim official crash finding.
What happened to the other people in the cars?
Dean’s mechanic and passenger, Rolf Wuetherich—spelled “Rolph” in the contemporaneous Times report—suffered serious injuries. Later reporting says he survived. Turnupseed was reported to have minor injuries.

What is known—and uncertain—about Dean’s death
The basic account is consistent: Dean succumbed to injuries from the collision that day. Reports differ, however, on precisely when and where he died. The October 1, 1955 Times report said he was dead on arrival at Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, while also quoting an attending physician as saying he died instantly at about 5:30 p.m. An Indiana Historical Society collection note instead says he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The available accounts do not resolve that conflict, so a precise death location or time should not be treated as settled.
Was James Dean speeding?
Dean had received a speeding ticket earlier that afternoon, and later popular accounts have described him as driving extremely fast. But speed at the moment of impact is disputed. A 1999 Los Angeles Times article reported that Failure Analysis Associates’ reconstruction concluded Dean was not speeding when the cars collided, despite eyewitness accounts and the police report. Because the underlying reconstruction and official crash report are not available in the cited coverage, the evidence here does not establish an exact speed or a definitive allocation of fault.

The claim that Dean’s Porsche was cursed is later folklore, not an explanation for the collision or his death. HISTORY.com recounts it as a rumor; the documented account centers on the crash near Cholame.
