The title’s “two Jim Carreys” refers to Carrey’s two characters, not two performers. Director Jeff Fowler has described an artistic reason for Reeves’s casting and how the actor shaped Shadow’s voice; the public account does not establish the details of private auditions or studio negotiations.
Who plays Shadow and the two Robotniks?
Paramount’s official cast listing names Keanu Reeves as Shadow and Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. The Associated Press likewise describes Carrey’s parts as dual roles. Paramount Global Content’s film listing confirms the character credits, while the AP’s opening-weekend report identifies Carrey’s dual performance.

Why did Jeff Fowler choose Keanu Reeves for Shadow?
Fowler’s publicly reported explanation focused on the kind of character work Reeves has done, rather than a specific audition or negotiation. In an interview with Spanish outlet MeriStation, Fowler said he had been a fan of Reeves for decades and valued his portrayals of complex, mysterious, charismatic characters who can draw audience empathy. That fit Shadow, a character who may first appear to be a villain but has more going on beneath that label. MeriStation’s interview with Fowler is the basis for this account; it does not describe the studio’s private casting process.
How did Reeves approach Shadow’s voice?
Reeves told CBS News that he went looking for his “inner Shadow” and found the voice work’s focus and articulation exhilarating. “There’s something really special about the concentration and the way that you have to articulate the voice and express,” he said. “I find it really exhilarating.” He also described his search for the character: “I went searching and looking … trying to find my inner Shadow and bring it out to the fore.”
#1 Best Overall
Fowler said Reeves paid attention to how the other characters sounded so Shadow would have a distinct voice of his own. “One of the things Keanu did, which is really smart, was identify the other characters’ voice performances,” Fowler told CBS. He added, “When you have four voice actors in the same film, they all want to have their own unique sound. Keanu identified that need and found his Shadow.” These comments describe Reeves’s vocal approach and work with the ensemble, not the circumstances of his casting. CBS News published the interview on December 11, 2024.
What did Shadow change about the film’s tone?
Fowler described Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the darkest of the three films, with Shadow making the story more exciting and somewhat more provocative while it retained a familiar emotional sensitivity. That is the director’s characterization of the film’s tone, not an objective rating or a claim about every viewer’s response. His comments appear in the MeriStation interview.
