Alex McCurry says strangers have repeatedly questioned whether her blonde-haired, blue-eyed youngest daughter is biologically hers. Her response, as reported by The Root, combines humor with a clear boundary: the children are hers, and their family life is not for strangers to investigate.
What Alex McCurry says happened
The Root reported on September 11, 2025, that McCurry, a Black mother, and her white husband, Rob, have three children. The youngest was three at the time of publication and is affectionately called “Pudge Pudge.” The article says their two older children present as clearly mixed race, while the youngest’s appearance has prompted questions from people online.
McCurry told PEOPLE, as quoted by The Root, that she was surprised when she first saw her daughter: “I’ll be honest with you, one of the things I thought was somebody made a mistake.” That moment of surprise is distinct from the strangers’ later assumptions: her own reaction was to an unexpected appearance, not evidence about her daughter’s parentage.
The Root recounts one commenter writing, “So nice of you to adopt these kids.” McCurry answered, “At least she didn’t say I was a good nanny,” then clarified: “It’s been two years of this! They’re biologically mine, all of them. Black people have kids that look like her too.”

Humor, then a boundary
McCurry posts family clips on TikTok as 4thFreshestMcCurry and has used humor in responding to comments, according to The Root. But the joking does not make the scrutiny welcome. She told PEOPLE: “I try to handle it with grace and patience because this is not the most common-looking kind of family, but at the end of the day, it’s none of anybody’s business.”
The distinction matters: a striking difference in appearance may attract attention, but it does not give strangers grounds to decide who belongs to a family. McCurry’s reported answer is direct, and she describes the relationship as private rather than an invitation to prove anything.

Why appearance cannot settle a question of parentage
Hair and eye color are influenced by multiple genes, so simple rules about one trait being “dominant” and another “recessive” cannot reliably predict every child’s appearance. Those general principles help explain why visual expectations can fail; they do not establish the genetic history of any particular child.
Eye color involves multiple genes
MedlinePlus Genetics’ eye-color explainer describes the roles of multiple genes, including OCA2 and HERC2, and explains why the older single-gene account is too simple. Family patterns may offer clues, but eye color is not always straightforward to predict.

Hair color is also complex
MedlinePlus Genetics says hair color depends on the amount and type of melanin and on many genes. It also notes that blond children often develop darker hair by their teenage years.
The National Human Genome Research Institute defines a polygenic trait as one influenced by two or more genes and explains that such traits do not follow Mendelian inheritance patterns. This is useful context for understanding why visible traits can vary; it cannot be used to infer or verify the biology of McCurry’s family.

What the story does—and does not—establish
The Root reports McCurry’s account and her statement that all three children are biologically hers. General genetics explainers clarify why appearance alone is an unreliable basis for assumptions. Neither the public comments nor the science explain the youngest child’s exact appearance, and no genetic assessment of the family is reported.
McCurry says she plans age-appropriate, science-based conversations about genetics with her children. That is her reported approach to helping them understand their family; it does not turn their private lives into a subject strangers are entitled to adjudicate.
