Arjuna of the Mahabharata and Rustam (also spelled Rostam) of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh are both celebrated epic heroes, but the available evidence does not establish them as direct counterparts. The useful comparison is broader: what each hero represents in his own epic, and where claims of similarity need more support.
Who are Arjuna and Rustam?
Arjuna in the Mahabharata
Arjuna is a major hero of the Sanskrit Mahabharata. The material available for this comparison does not provide enough detail to make specific claims about his weapons, supernatural assistance, family episodes, or obligations without turning to the epic itself.
Rustam in the Shahnameh
Rustam is the most celebrated champion of Persian folklore, and his exploits dominate the legendary section of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, according to the Fitzwilliam Museum’s guide to the epic. The guide describes a long life spent serving seven kings, alongside episodes that show the limits and costs of heroic power: Rustam inadvertently kills his son Sohrab and later faces a difficult encounter with Esfandiyar.
What can responsibly be called similar?
At the broadest level, both figures belong to major epic traditions and are remembered as heroic warriors. That is a starting point for comparison, not proof that their characters, deeds, or narrative roles match. The available museum guide identifies parallels between Rustam’s feats and those of Indra and Krishna; it does not name Arjuna as a parallel.
A more specific comparison would need to examine the primary texts: each hero’s role in the story, martial skill and weapons, divine or supernatural aid, family ties, duties to rulers and communities, and the consequences of heroic strength. Those are useful questions to investigate, but they should not be presented as demonstrated Arjuna–Rustam likenesses on the evidence available here.
Why the Shahnameh is larger than Rustam’s story
Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh is a medieval Persian verse epic built on an earlier prose history. Encyclopaedia Iranica dates the prose account’s completion to 957 CE and Ferdowsi’s verse epic to 1010 CE. It describes the work as a collective narrative of Iran and its people, not simply a sequence of adventures about one champion, and regards it as Iran’s national epic.

That context matters when comparing Rustam with Arjuna: a hero’s importance derives partly from the world and themes of the epic in which he appears. Shared heroic stature alone does not make two figures interchangeable.

No. The material cited here establishes neither direct borrowing between the characters nor a historical route by which one tradition shaped the other. Broad parallels between Indian and Persian epic traditions should not be stretched into a claim about the origins of Arjuna or Rustam.

The exact Arjuna–Rustam comparison has been signaled by a British Library blog search result titled “A comparison between Rustam and Arjuna” from May 2021, but the page text could not be examined. Its specific argument and examples therefore cannot be verified here. Without that text or direct comparison of the epics, claims that the two heroes share particular traits remain unconfirmed.

How to read the comparison
- Established: Rustam is central to the legendary section of the Shahnameh, and his stories combine extraordinary heroism with tragic consequences.
- Supported more broadly: Sources identify connections between the Shahnameh and Indian epic traditions, but the cited example of heroic parallels names Indra and Krishna, not Arjuna.
- Not established here: A one-to-one match between Rustam and Arjuna, particular shared episodes or traits, or direct influence of one character on the other.
