Andrew Stephan directed War Game: The Making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 by building the film around footage recorded by GSC Game World and interviews and B-roll he shot with team members in Prague. What is War Game about?
The documentary follows GSC Game World’s effort to make S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl under wartime conditions. The official Xbox description frames it as a story of creation amid destruction and of the human toll on the studio. It is both a behind-the-scenes account of a major game production and a portrait of the people trying to continue creative work during a national crisis.

How did Stephan assemble the film?
GSC’s footage formed the documentary’s foundation
In an October 2024 GamesBeat interview, Stephan said GSC had recorded its own work before the documentary team joined. The studio shared a large archive, including footage from 2021 and 2022, and continued sending material the filmmakers requested during editing. That archive allowed the film to draw on the studio’s experience directly even though Stephan’s crew could not film in Ukraine during the war.

This approach shaped what the documentary could show: the crew did not capture the studio’s wartime work on location in Kyiv. Instead, the film combines GSC’s recordings with material shot by Stephan and the production team elsewhere.
He filmed interviews and B-roll in Prague
Stephan said he made several trips to Prague, where he interviewed members of the team who had relocated there, filmed in the office, and captured B-roll. These interviews and location footage gave the documentary new scenes to pair with the studio archive.
The project began through an Xbox connection
Stephan said his route to the directing role began with Tina Summerford, whom he knew from earlier Xbox documentary work. Summerford and a Microsoft colleague helped build GSC’s trust in the project before approaching Stephan to pitch for the job in spring 2023.
What did Stephan want the documentary to communicate?
Stephan said he was interested in the meaning creative work can hold during war and in helping viewers see the people behind a familiar game franchise. He described art-making as a potential source of respite or meaning, while cautioning that he could not claim to understand the team’s experience in their place.

In the GamesBeat interview, Stephan recalled team members speaking in the film: “The game, for us, is now an act of resistance” and “We make the game with one hand and load our weapons with the other.” These are statements by GSC members as described by Stephan, not his own words. He also said of the people he interviewed: “There’s not a single person at that company that we interviewed, or that we didn’t, who hasn’t lost someone. Who hasn’t lost friends or family.”

The film is about the making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, not a substitute for playing it. Xbox Wire’s 2024 account described the studio’s evacuation and the game’s planned release, naming Windows, Steam, Xbox, and Game Pass. Those platform details belong to that 2024 account and are not a check of the game’s current availability.
