A July 2025 Scroll essay by Sara Varghese interprets that shift as a quiet rebellion against polished, carefully curated celebrity culture. The reported moments are vivid, but they are not proof that memes alone caused a comeback or that every listener shares the same motive.
Why Himesh Reshammiya is popular again
Varghese’s Scroll essay traces the renewed attention to online recirculation of Reshammiya’s image and music, alongside nostalgia for his 2000s hits. Meme pages brought back the nasal vocals, leather trench coat and signature snapback cap—traits that had once made him a target of ridicule. The essay describes a fandom mixing irony with affection: people can recognize the theatricality and still enjoy the songs.
That is the essay’s cultural interpretation, not a measured account of audience behavior. The available reporting offers examples of renewed interest, rather than a study establishing how many fans returned or what caused them to do so.
From ridicule to camp—and sometimes sincerity
The change is not necessarily that Reshammiya’s style became less conspicuous. It is that audiences can approach it differently. A nasal vocal, melodramatic performance or extravagant look can be enjoyed as camp without being dismissed as a failed attempt at conventional coolness. Irony may open the door, while nostalgia or straightforward pleasure keeps listeners there.

Scroll frames this as a contrast with polished, curated celebrity culture: Reshammiya’s appeal lies partly in the conspicuous traits that a more controlled image might smooth away. That is a useful lens on this particular comeback, not evidence that all celebrities are polished in the same way or that Reshammiya alone stands for a generation.
The concerts turned the signature style into a shared joke
Scroll reports that the Cap Mania Tour began in Mumbai on May 31, 2025. At a Mumbai show, Reshammiya asked the crowd, “Thoda regular gaaun, ya naak se gaaun?”—“Should I sing in my regular voice or with my nasal twang?” The audience chose the nasal style. It is a memorable instance of fans openly embracing the feature that had long defined his public image, but one concert exchange cannot stand in for every listener.

The same essay reports that his first Delhi concert in July sold out quickly, prompting organizers to add a second date at the same stadium, which also sold out. Scroll also says organizers handed out red HR caps to the Delhi audience. That makes the cap part of the concert’s visual identity; the report does not say the caps were sold or establish that official retail merchandise was available.
Reshammiya has made the label part of his identity
In a February 28, 2026 Vogue India profile by Sadaf Shaikh, Reshammiya described accepting the public’s labels rather than trying to shed them: “If the public wants to brand me a certain way, I’ll accept it. I’ll make it my identity. Public sab jaanti hain.” The remark helps explain why the comeback reads as an embrace rather than a makeover: he presents a recognizable persona as something to build on.

That embrace also connects to his account of Badass Ravi Kumar, a retro-styled film whose exaggerated music and dialogue lean into spectacle. Vogue quotes him calling it “larger-than-life” but “very self-aware,” adding that its retro setting helps younger audiences understand the excess as intentional. In an interview published February 24, 2025, The Indian Express reported his preference for films that are “stressbusters and help you have fun,” and his view that the character draws on childhood memories of Indian cinema and continuing affection for retro material.
Nostalgia links the old hits to a newer audience
For longtime listeners, the songs and styling can recall the period when Reshammiya’s hits were ubiquitous. For younger listeners encountering them through memes or clips, the same material can feel newly strange, funny or knowingly theatrical. The two responses can coexist: a listener can laugh at a style’s excess and still enjoy it without needing to pretend it is something else.

His career also predates the current wave of attention. Vogue and The Indian Express both place his composing debut in the 1998 film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. The Indian Express reports Reshammiya’s account that Salman Khan helped him secure a song in the film, giving him an opening in music after television production work. This background makes the comeback less a story of an unknown artist suddenly appearing than of an established figure being received through a changed cultural lens.

Vogue’s 2026 profile includes several figures that Reshammiya gave about his work: he says more than 40 songs feature variations of Sonia’s name, that he follows a rule of composing one song a day, that he plays new tunes to a core group of 100 people, and that he has a bank of 10,000 songs. These are interview claims, not independently audited totals, and they describe his working habits and catalogue rather than the scale or cause of his renewed popularity.

The evidence for the comeback itself remains journalistic and interpretive: reported concert sales, an audience response, online recirculation and an artist’s own comments. The Press Information Bureau’s May 4, 2025 account of a WAVES 2025 music-industry panel provides wider industry context, but it does not quantify Reshammiya’s comeback or establish memes as its cause: PIB’s panel report.
