What Hammer said in the 2024 interview
Hammer spoke retrospectively about the period when allegations against him became public and his Hollywood work collapsed. As reported by PerthNow, he called the cannibal label “bizarre.” The Los Angeles Times quoted him describing the experience as “an ego death, a career death.” He also said he was “grateful” for what had happened.
These are Hammer’s interpretations of his experience. The Los Angeles Times reported that he also discussed treatment, sobriety, personal change and family relationships during the podcast. They should be understood as his account, not as independently verified conclusions about his health or the allegations.
What the allegations involved—and what they do not establish
In 2021, multiple women made allegations about Hammer’s behavior. Contemporary reports described private messages attributed to him that included violent sexual fantasies and references to cannibalism. Those reported messages and fantasies are not proof that he ate human flesh; the sources reviewed do not establish that he did.

One woman, identified as Effie, accused Hammer of sexually assaulting her during an alleged 2017 encounter. Hammer denied the sexual-abuse allegations. The allegation concerning Effie is distinct from the reported messages and from other women’s claims, and the claims should not be collapsed into one accusation.
What happened to his acting work
June 2024 coverage reported that Hammer had lost representation and left projects including The Offer and Shotgun Wedding. That is the professional fallout reported at the time; it does not make “career-ending” a settled or permanent description. In February 2025, The Guardian reported Hammer saying he had completed a film and was receiving offers. That later account is separate from the 2024 Painful Lessons interview, and it does not by itself establish the full state of his career.

What the legal outcome means
CBS News reported that Los Angeles County prosecutors said in 2023 Hammer would not face criminal charges in the case involving Effie. No criminal charges were brought in that case. That is not a trial verdict, does not establish that the allegations were false, and should not be treated as a legal ruling on every public allegation.
The available reporting does not identify a court, regulator or prosecutor determination that resolves the truth of all the public allegations. The distinction matters: allegations, a subject’s denial and a prosecutor’s decision not to charge are different kinds of statements and outcomes.

How to read the “cannibal” label
Coverage of the controversy connected the label to alleged messages and fantasies. That is not the same as evidence of an act. Hammer later addressed the question directly in a February 2025 interview with Louis Theroux. The Guardian quoted Theroux asking, “Are you a cannibal?” and Hammer replying that someone would have to “actually eat human flesh” to be one, adding, “So no.” This later denial should not be confused with his 2024 comments about how the label and its consequences affected him.
The headline’s phrase “career-ending” captures the scale of the professional fallout described in June 2024 reporting, but it should be read as a dated characterization, not a verified, permanent status. Later reporting included Hammer’s claim that acting work had resumed.
