Jim Henson died in New York City on May 16, 1990, aged 53. Contemporary reports attributed his death to pneumonia and a rapidly advancing bacterial infection that had progressed to multiorgan failure.
What caused Jim Henson’s death?
Contemporary reports described the cause as pneumonia and a severe bacterial infection. The Los Angeles Times quoted the hospital’s initial description as “a massive bacterial infection, more specifically known as streptococcus pneumonia.” The infection had advanced by the time Henson reached the hospital.
The hospital account, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, said the infection had caused multiorgan failure: kidney failure, inability of the blood to clot, heart failure, and shock. The report did not identify an individual speaker for that statement. Los Angeles Times, May 17, 1990.
How quickly did his illness progress?
Reports described a very short period between Henson’s hospitalization and death. The Washington Post reported that he was admitted to New York Hospital on Tuesday, May 15, 1990, and died the next day. The Los Angeles Times said he had reached the emergency room less than 24 hours before his death. Washington Post, May 17, 1990; Los Angeles Times, May 17, 1990.

According to the Washington Post, Henson became ill while visiting family in North Carolina and returned to New York before being admitted. That report said a doctor in North Carolina examined him and did not find pneumonia. A separate Los Angeles Times/Associated Press account, quoting Henson’s mother, said his physician cousin did not examine him and characterized their contact as brief. The accounts conflict, so the details of any consultation in North Carolina are not settled. Washington Post, May 17, 1990; Los Angeles Times/Associated Press, May 18, 1990.
