Disney+’s 2025 animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw adapts Jeff Kinney’s third book, but creator and screenwriter Kinney says the film gives Greg’s relationship with his father, Frank, a clear emotional throughline. Its opening key mishap turns an ordinary practical problem into a sign of Frank’s frustration—and his worry that he has not prepared his son for life.

Which Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie is this?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw is a 2025 animated film on Disney+, adapted from the third book in Kinney’s series. Disney lists its runtime as 1 hour 18 minutes. Disney UK announced an exclusive Disney+ premiere for December 5, 2025; it is the fourth animated feature adaptation in the platform’s lineup, after the 2021 original, Rodrick Rules (2022) and Christmas: Cabin Fever (2023). What changes in Greg’s story?

The clearest change Kinney describes is one of emphasis, rather than a specific list of altered scenes: the movie foregrounds Greg and Frank’s father-son relationship. Kinney has said that adapting a story for the screen involves making changes to create emotional resonance. He describes this film’s story as being about a parent and child trying to connect and find common ground. (Animation Scoop interview)

That framing gives Greg’s broader misadventures a more explicit emotional center. Instead of treating Frank only as an obstacle in Greg’s way, the film highlights the gap between a father’s expectations and a son’s readiness—and the care that can sit beneath a frustrated reaction.

Why does the movie open with a key?

Kinney points to the opening as a compact example of that dynamic. Greg cannot figure out how to use a key. Frank reacts with frustration, but also with alarm that he may not have taught his son a basic skill. As Kinney put it, “In fact, this movie kicks off with a scene where Greg can’t figure out how to work a key and his father is really frustrated by this and he’s also horrified that maybe he hasn’t taught Greg how to use a key.” (Laughing Place interview)

The incident works as more than a gag about Greg’s ineptitude: it shows Frank measuring his parenting through his son’s ability to manage the world. That makes the father’s concern part of the scene, rather than leaving the moment solely within Greg’s comic perspective.

What Kinney says the father-son story is about

Kinney’s explanation centers on connection, not simply conflict. In the Animation Scoop interview, he said: “But I think that most kids and most parents want to connect with one another, they want to find common ground, and that’s what this movie is all about.” The quote describes his intended focus; it does not prescribe how every viewer must interpret the film.

The key scene makes that idea concrete: Frank’s frustration comes from worrying about what Greg can do without him, while Greg’s difficulty exposes how differently the two see growing up. The film’s emotional emphasis is therefore a father trying to prepare his son, alongside the familiar comedy of Greg navigating situations in his own way.

How to compare the film with the book

The Last Straw is the source novel and the third book in the official series catalog. (Wimpy Kid books) Kinney’s comments establish that the screen version makes adaptation choices and foregrounds the father-son relationship. They do not establish a complete scene-by-scene account of what the film adds, removes, compresses or rearranges.

  • Medium: The book tells Greg’s story through prose and illustrations; the film presents it as animation.
  • Emphasis: Kinney specifically identifies Greg and Frank’s connection as central to the movie’s story.
  • Individual plot changes: To claim that a particular event was added, removed or reordered, compare that moment directly in the novel and film. Kinney’s interviews do not provide a full change list.
