Quiet table games
1. What’s missing from the tray?
Players: Any group. You’ll need: A tray, at least 10 small objects, a cover, and paper and pencils. Show the objects for 30 seconds, cover the tray, then give players five minutes to list what they remember. Score one point per correct item, or remove an object between rounds and ask what disappeared. For mixed ages, use fewer objects or let younger children answer aloud. Keep small objects away from children under three.
2. Holiday memory match
Players: Any group, taking turns. You’ll need: Pairs of seasonal picture cards. Lay the cards face down. Each player turns over two; a matching pair stays with them, and a mismatch is turned back over. The player with the most pairs wins. Use large cards with clear pictures for younger players or anyone who finds small print difficult. This is an adaptation of the tray memory game described by the NSPCC Christmas games activity sheet.
3. Christmas trivia
Players: Individuals or teams. You’ll need: Questions prepared in advance. Ask a mix of easy and harder seasonal questions, awarding a point for each correct answer. Include a pass option so guests who do not know a particular holiday tradition can still enjoy the game. For children, use picture prompts or read questions aloud.

How to choose the right games
- Match the group: Consider guests’ ages, abilities, and comfort. Offer seated, no-song, and no-food options so performance or sensory preferences do not keep anyone out.
- Fit the space: Memory, drawing, trivia, and story games work at a table. Tossing and rolling games need a clear area; the FCA packet specifically calls for a large empty room or gym for ornament roll.
- Check the setup: Dice, paper, and household objects make low-preparation choices. Timed challenges may require cups, bells, ornaments, balloons, or other dedicated materials.
- Vary the energy: Alternate quiet rounds with movement games, and let participation in singing or acting be optional. The CDC’s April 7, 2026 holiday guidance suggests active group games as one way to add movement to holiday gatherings.
- Think about food and hygiene: For marshmallow and candy-cane games, account for allergies, choking risk, and shared food. Use non-food substitutes or individual portions where needed.
Keep children’s games age-appropriate
Before play, check the ages and abilities of the children taking part, supervise activities, and consider allergies and choking risks. The NDNA advises that children’s activities be risk-assessed and use materials suited to their developmental stage. CPSC guidance says not to give balls or toys with small parts to children under three, and to keep deflated balloons away from children under eight. Check product age labels and choking warnings, and remove unsuitable materials rather than relying on a game rule to make them safe.
CPSC’s 2021 holiday release reported an average of about 100 Christmas tree fires and about 1,100 candle fires in November and December each year, based on 2016–2018 data; those fires resulted in 30 deaths, 180 injuries, and nearly $56 million in property loss per year. These figures concern general holiday fire safety, not the relative danger of party games. For a gathering, keep play away from candles and hot drinks and follow the full CPSC holiday safety release.
