These 14 selections are not a definitive ranking; together, they show the range of roles and genres that shaped his public image.

Laura (1944)
Before horror made him a household name, Price appeared as Shelby Carpenter in Otto Preminger’s noir mystery. The official legacy biography and MoMA both place Laura among the important early films in his career. Vincent Price legacy biography; MoMA film retrospective; AFI Catalog.
-
House of Wax (1953)

MoMA and TCM include the film among his significant genre work. MoMA film retrospective; TCM profile.
-
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Price plays eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren, who invites guests to spend a night in a supposedly haunted house. -
House of Usher (1960)
In Roger Corman’s adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe, Price plays Roderick Usher, a man consumed by the decay and secrets of his family home. -
The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
Price returns to the charged, psychologically unstable world of Poe as Nicholas Medina, whose family history is tangled with cruelty and fear. -
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
As the cruel Prince Prospero, Price presides over a decadent court trying to shut out a deadly plague. The role makes his elegance an instrument of power, fitting the film’s stylized, theatrical vision of evil. The official biography, TCM and MoMA all name it among his major Poe-era films. -
Witchfinder General (1968)
Price plays Matthew Hopkins, a historical witch-hunter whose authority enables brutal persecution. The performance is less flamboyantly supernatural than many of his best-known horror roles; its menace comes from a man who can present cruelty as duty. BFI’s retrospective identifies the film among his notable horror work. BFI retrospective.
-
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Price’s Dr. Anton Phibes is a disfigured, vengeful figure who stages elaborate murders inspired by biblical plagues. The film’s macabre premise and stylized revenge plot suit the actor’s blend of composure and theatrical menace. TCM singles it out among his notable 1970s roles. TCM profile.

Theater of Blood (1973)
As Edward Lionheart, a disgraced Shakespearean actor taking revenge on critics, Price turns theatrical grandiosity into macabre comedy. TCM uses the title spelling Theater of Blood; BFI spells it Theatre of Blood and also counts it among his notable work. TCM profile; BFI retrospective.
-
Vincent (1982)
In Tim Burton’s short film, Price narrates the story of a boy whose imagination is shaped by horror movies and the desire to become like Vincent Price. It is voice work rather than a conventional screen role, but that distinction is precisely what makes it revealing: his voice had become a signature in its own right. The official legacy biography and TCM include the short among his landmarks. Vincent Price legacy biography; TCM profile.
-
Thriller (1983)
Price’s spoken-word narration gives Michael Jackson’s music video its final surge of horror atmosphere. He does not appear as a conventional character; instead, the unmistakable voice that had accompanied generations of screen scares becomes part of a pop-culture event. The official biography and TCM identify the narration as a late-career landmark. Vincent Price legacy biography; TCM profile.
-
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Price’s final film appearance was as the gentle inventor who creates Edward. The role is brief and tender, far removed from the sinister figures that had defined much of his screen image. What made Price’s performances distinctive?
Price could make refinement feel threatening, but he was not simply a monster specialist. MoMA describes his screen range as including the cad, romantic, adventurer and villain. His own explanation of his horror roles captures the human motive beneath the menace: “I don’t play monsters, I play men besieged by fate and out for revenge.” Vincent Price legacy biography; MoMA film retrospective.
That range is why Laura, House of Wax, the Poe cycle, the 1970s revenge films and his later voice and character work belong in the same conversation. They trace a career in which the actor’s public identity expanded without erasing the performer underneath it.
