John Turturro did not return as Carmine Falcone in The Penguin because, according to showrunner Lauren LeFranc, his schedule would not work for the series. The production then looked for an actor who could bring the character’s required gravitas and ferocity, and LeFranc said Mark Strong fit. Turturro separately said that the show’s violence toward women was not for him; the two explanations are distinct and can both be true.
How the recasting happened
Turturro played Carmine Falcone in Matt Reeves’s The Batman. When the character returned in The Penguin, including in flashbacks connected to Sofia Falcone’s past, Mark Strong took the role.

LeFranc said the team initially wanted Turturro to reprise Carmine, but his schedule would not work for the series. That left casting focused on finding someone who could convey the character’s imposing presence. As LeFranc put it, “John’s a really talented actor and was exceptional in the film, but once we realized that his schedule wasn’t going to work out for our show, it became quickly about who has that sort of gravitas and ferociousness, that Mark Strong actually does have.”
Why Carmine remained in the story
The production could not simply write Carmine out without changing Sofia’s story. LeFranc described him as central to her character arc, which the show deliberately plotted to intertwine with his: “We certainly weren’t going to not have Carmine in our story. We very specifically plotted Sofia’s arc to be interwoven with Carmine’s arc, as well.”

In the showrunner’s account, Carmine’s violence was already part of the character established in The Batman. She pointed to his killing of Selina Kyle’s mother, his attempt to kill Selina, and his killing of Selina’s friend Annika. The flashbacks in The Penguin extend that context through Carmine’s violence toward his wife Isabella and the murders attributed to Sofia, material tied to Sofia’s origin story.

Turturro gave a personal and creative reason alongside the scheduling issue. He objected to the series’ depiction of violence toward women, saying, “In the show, there was a lot of violence towards women, and that’s not my thing.” He contrasted that with the film’s approach: “It happens off-screen. It’s scarier that way.”

LeFranc’s public account emphasized scheduling: “To my knowledge it was due to scheduling conflicts.” She also said she respected an actor’s personal reasons for declining a role. On Carmine’s characterization, she noted that she and Matt Reeves agreed he was “a very violent man and has a violent streak against women.” These statements describe different perspectives: LeFranc explained the production’s stated casting constraint, while Turturro explained his own objection. They do not establish the details of private negotiations.
