Holland Review: Nicole Kidman Is Wasted in a Movie You’ve Seen Too Many Times

Nicole Kidman gives Holland a compelling center, and Mimi Cave supplies striking suburban unease. But familiar plotting and a muted payoff leave the thriller short of its promise.

Holland has a vivid surface and a committed Nicole Kidman performance, but its familiar domestic-suspicion premise never develops into a thriller as gripping as its setup promises. Mimi Cave gives the film an uneasy, carefully composed look; the screenplay and pacing leave that atmosphere with too little suspense or payoff.

What is Holland about?

Directed by Mimi Cave and written by Andrew Sodroski, Holland is a 2025 thriller set in Holland, Michigan. Nicole Kidman plays Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker whose apparently perfect life with her husband and son begins to look less secure when she suspects there is a secret beneath the family’s domestic routine. The film is set in 2000, according to The Guardian. Its premise is best approached without knowing more: the pleasure is meant to come from watching Nancy try to make sense of what she sees.

Matthew Macfadyen, Jude Hill, Gael García Bernal, Rachel Sennott, Lennon Parham, Isaac Krasner and Jeff Pope also appear. Amazon’s official film feature lists Kidman among the producers as well as the star.

Kidman gives the film more than the script gives her

Kidman plays Nancy with an alertness that makes small shifts in her surroundings feel consequential. She can suggest that a person is trying to keep an ordinary day intact even as doubt keeps intruding. That tension gives the film a human center, and it is why the gap between performance and material matters: Nancy’s growing suspicion calls for a character whose choices and discoveries steadily change the story, but the writing does not consistently give Kidman enough to work with.

The cast includes performers who could make the family and its orbit feel more unpredictable. Instead, the film’s central question tends to carry more weight than the relationships around it. The result is not a lack of effort from Kidman; it is a mismatch between her sustained intensity and a narrative that does not build with equal force.

Cave’s style is the strongest source of unease

Cave gives Holland a distinct visual character. The town’s tulip imagery and carefully arranged domestic spaces can look charming and faintly artificial at once. Clarisse Loughrey, reviewing for The Independent, points to the floral wallpaper, porcelain figurines and Dutch-coded suburban imagery as more vivid than the story, which she describes as dry melodrama. The Guardian’s Adrian Horton likewise credits the film’s style and Cave’s direction even while finding its suspense lacking.

That visual unease is a real asset, not a substitute for one. A composed frame can make the familiar seem strange, but suspense needs more than suggestion: discoveries must alter what the audience thinks is happening, and the story must make those changes accumulate. Horton argues that the pacing and turns blunt the effect of Kidman’s performance. Loughrey’s concern is different but related: the eventual reveal does not satisfy the questions the film has raised. Both assessments point to the same divide between atmosphere and dramatic payoff, without establishing a universal critical consensus.

Why the thriller feels familiar

The setup—an apparently orderly household, a spouse who may be hiding something, and a woman trying to determine what is true—belongs to a well-traveled domestic-thriller tradition. Familiarity is not a flaw by itself. A film can make a known premise feel newly unsettling through sharp character work, escalating uncertainty or an unexpected perspective. Holland has visual ideas, but its progression does not consistently make the genre’s familiar questions feel newly urgent.

As Nancy investigates alongside colleague Dave, played by Gael García Bernal, the film has opportunities to deepen its uncertainty and make each new piece of information change the stakes. Instead, the pacing can make the investigation feel less like a tightening spiral than a sequence of turns waiting for their effect. The problem is not that the movie has no ideas; it is that its ideas about appearances, suspicion and domestic life do not resolve into a satisfying dramatic shape.

Is Holland worth watching?

It may suit viewers drawn to Kidman’s performances, off-kilter suburban imagery or thrillers that begin with a polished domestic surface. Cave’s visual choices give the film a texture that distinguishes it from a purely routine-looking mystery. But those strengths are unlikely to overcome the thin suspense and underwhelming payoff for viewers who want the plot to keep tightening its grip.

The title’s verdict is an argument about the film, not a measurable fact: Kidman is the most compelling reason to watch, while the story around her feels too familiar and too weakly paced to match her work. As Horton put it in The Guardian, “A thriller more in intention than execution, Holland certainly looks stylish, owing to sharp direction by Mimi Cave.”
