They are not all pilot stories; the role aviation plays is different in each.
At a glance: four different aviation angles
| Film | Aviation’s role | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas Takes Flight (2021) | Pilot and family-owned regional airline | Holiday romance |
| Operation Christmas Drop (2020) | Air Force pilot and airborne holiday tradition | Romance with a military-aid premise |
| Carry-On (2024) | Airport security and a Christmas Eve flight | Thriller |
| The Flight Before Christmas (2015) | Passenger flight diverted by a snowstorm | Snowbound romantic comedy |
1. Christmas Takes Flight: a pilot and her family’s airline
Jenny Beckett is a pilot at her family’s regional airline, which is acquired by an efficiency-minded CEO. His cost-cutting plans put the airline’s annual holiday charity benefit at risk, and Jenny tries to save it. That makes the airline itself—not simply a trip or airport setting—central to the holiday-romance premise.
Paramount Global Content lists the CBS drama/holiday/romance as a 2021 release with a 90-minute runtime. See Paramount Global Content’s title page.
2. Operation Christmas Drop: an Air Force base’s holiday tradition
A political aide arrives seeking to close a tropical military base and falls for an Air Force pilot connected to its airborne Christmas tradition. The aviation angle is a military airlift tied to holiday aid, rather than airline operations or a passenger’s journey.

#1 Best Overall
Netflix lists the film as a 2020 release and names Kat Graham, Alexander Ludwig, and Virginia Madsen among its cast. View Netflix’s title page.
3. Carry-On: Christmas Eve airport suspense
For a sharper change of tone, this 2024 thriller centers on an airport security officer pressured to let a dangerous item onto a Christmas Eve flight. The story’s aviation connection is airport screening and the threat to a departing flight; it is not a pilot-centered film.
Rank #2
Netflix lists Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, and Jason Bateman in the cast. Director Jaume Collet-Serra described it as “a fun, popcorn thriller” he hoped audiences could enjoy “all year round,” while also saying the holiday travel theme is integral to the story. Read Netflix Tudum’s article about Carry-On.
4. The Flight Before Christmas: a snowstorm-diverted holiday romance
Stephanie and Michael meet aboard a flight just before Christmas Eve. A snowstorm diverts them to Montana, where they end up sharing a room at a local bed and breakfast. Here, aviation sets the characters in motion through passenger travel and an unexpected diversion; the story then turns to the romance on the ground.
