Spoilers through the season-three story point covered by Sky’s dragon guide. Team Black’s dragon roster changes as dragons die and new riders claim previously riderless dragons. The guide below separates active Black-associated dragons from former mounts, and distinguishes original bonds from later claims. HBO’s Dragon Index lists named dragons; rider and status details here come from Sky and other secondary guides.
Team Black’s original bonds and younger dragons
These pairings are associated with Rhaenyra’s household and family. The younger dragons are not interchangeable with battle-ready mounts: age and capability depend on the story point.
Syrax — Rhaenyra Targaryen
Syrax is Rhaenyra’s dragon and personal mount. Sky’s season-three guide includes Syrax in the confrontation involving Sheepstealer; see its dragon guide for the show’s current story framing.
Caraxes — Daemon Targaryen
Known as the Blood Wyrm, Caraxes is Daemon’s dragon. Sky describes his long, serpentine build and experience; Tatler Asia’s guide also discusses the dragon.

Moondancer — Baela Targaryen
Moondancer is the young dragon bonded to Baela. Sky describes the pair as training for riding and battle.
Tyraxes — Joffrey Velaryon
Tyraxes is associated with Joffrey. At the Dance story point described by Sky, the dragon could fly with a rider but was too young to fight.
Stormcloud — Aegon III
Stormcloud is a hatchling associated with Aegon III. TIME’s season-two roster included Stormcloud among Team Black’s dragons, while later guides distinguish young dragons from mounts ready for war. Treat this as a young-dragon association, not a claim that Stormcloud is a combat mount. See TIME’s season-two guide and Tatler Asia’s dragon guide.

Later claims that expand Rhaenyra’s forces
Not every Black-associated bond began as a household pairing. Some dragons had earlier riders; others were claimed later by Dragonseeds or in the show’s adaptation of the story.

Seasmoke — Addam of Hull
Seasmoke was previously bonded to Laenor Velaryon and later chose Addam. Addam is the rider in Sky’s season-three guide, so describing him as Seasmoke’s only rider would erase the earlier bond.
Sheepstealer — Rhaena Targaryen in the television adaptation
In the television story covered by Sky’s season-three guide, Sheepstealer lives in the Vale and accepts Rhaena after she offers food. The dragon remains wild and volatile rather than fully tamed. This is an adaptation-specific assignment: Tatler Asia notes that Nettles claims Sheepstealer in the book, not Rhaena.

Vermithor — Hugh Hammer; Silverwing — Ulf White
Hugh Hammer’s claim to Vermithor and Ulf White’s claim to Silverwing expand Rhaenyra’s forces through Dragonseeds, rather than through original household bonds. TIME’s season-two article described both dragons as unclaimed at that earlier snapshot; Sky’s later guide identifies Hugh and Ulf as their riders. Earlier unclaimed listings describe a different point in the story.
Former Black mounts whose deaths change the roster
These dragons matter to the war’s history, but they are not active mounts at this story point.

Meleys — Rhaenys Targaryen
Meleys, known as the Red Queen, dies alongside Rhaenys at Rook’s Rest, as Sky’s guide recounts.
Vermax — Jacaerys Velaryon
Sky and GamesRadar+ record Vermax’s death in the Battle of the Gullet. Jacaerys also dies at that story point, so neither belongs in a list of active rider-and-dragon pairs. See GamesRadar+’s dragon and rider guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why dragon lists disagree
A roster is only accurate for a particular point in the series. A dragon may die, a rider may change, or a wild or riderless dragon may be claimed. For example, TIME’s season-two snapshot called Vermithor and Silverwing unclaimed; later reporting assigns them to Hugh and Ulf. Counts also depend on whether a guide includes hatchlings and deceased dragons.

Keep unclaimed dragons separate from Team Black’s rider-and-dragon pairs. The Cannibal and Grey Ghost are wild dragons associated with Dragonstone, but they should not be counted among Rhaenyra’s claimed mounts. HBO’s official Dragon Index helps identify named dragons, but does not provide a complete current faction, rider, and status list.
Show canon and book canon
Rhaena’s connection to Sheepstealer is the clearest reason to specify the medium: the television adaptation assigns the claim to her, while the book account gives it to Nettles. Do not treat the two versions as a single unchanged roster. George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood covers Targaryen history and the Dance of the Dragons, but it is not an exact match for every adaptation choice.
