It may refer to an Australian documentary and report publicized in 2020, a separate BBC Panorama investigation described by Animal Aid as airing in 2021, or a 2026 PBS film about the labor behind horse racing. They cover different subjects, so the title alone is not enough to establish which one is meant.
Three possible documentaries, three different subjects
| Work | Year and origin | Subject described by its publisher or campaign source |
|---|---|---|
| Australian documentary and report | 2020; published by the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses with Animal Liberation Queensland and Animal Liberation | Alleged mistreatment during racing and what happens to horses afterward, including claims about horses sent to slaughter. AnimalKIND’s October 26, 2020 article describes the project. |
| The Dark Side of Horse Racing | 2021; BBC Panorama program, as dated by Animal Aid | Animal Aid says the program featured its undercover footage concerning slaughter in England. See Animal Aid’s horse-racing campaign page. |
| BACKSIDE: The Unseen Hands of Horse Racing | Premiered April 13, 2026; PBS Independent Lens | A film directed by Raúl O. Paz-Pastrana about immigrant grooms and the labor behind Churchill Downs, according to PBS Independent Lens. |
The closest match to the phrase “dark side exposed” is the Australian project, whose title is echoed in AnimalKIND’s 2020 article. That resemblance is not proof that it is the work intended by the headline. The British program shares similar wording but is a different production, while the PBS film has a different title and focus.

What the Australian project claims—and what the available account establishes
AnimalKIND describes the Australian documentary and report as investigating alleged mistreatment in racing and the fate of horses after their racing careers. Its account says the project reports on the number of racehorses sent to slaughter, but the cited article passage does not provide a figure or explain how it was calculated. No number should be repeated without consulting the original report and checking its definitions, sample, and time period.
These are claims attributed to the project’s publishers and campaign partners, not independently established national statistics. A documentary can raise important questions, but its reported findings should not be treated as official figures unless the underlying evidence and method support that use.

- This is an awesome bullet point.
Why the British investigation should not be conflated with the Australian one
Animal Aid describes BBC Panorama’s 2021 program as featuring its undercover footage about slaughter in England. That is a separate investigation in a different jurisdiction from the Australian project. Their findings, definitions, and evidence cannot be combined as if they measured the same population or period.
The PBS film is separate again: PBS presents BACKSIDE as a documentary about immigrant grooms and the work behind Churchill Downs, not as an investigation centered on slaughter. Treating all three as one “new documentary” would mislead readers about both the films and the issues they address.

How to identify the film behind the headline
- If the story mentions the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, Animal Liberation Queensland, or an accompanying report, it likely refers to the Australian project publicized in 2020.
- If it names BBC Panorama, Animal Aid, or England, it refers to the distinct 2021 British program.
- If it names PBS Independent Lens, director Raúl O. Paz-Pastrana, immigrant grooms, or Churchill Downs, it refers to the 2026 film BACKSIDE.
AnimalKIND’s article points readers to the Australian documentary online and describes it as 38 minutes long. The cited material does not establish an Amazon listing or physical DVD edition, and the accompanying report is a PDF rather than a verified retail product.
