House of David Season 1 is an eight-episode biblical historical drama about David’s rise and King Saul’s decline. Its story follows the scriptural arc from Saul’s rejection to David’s anointing and confrontation with Goliath, while expanding that arc with invented subplots. Here’s what to know about the episodes, the show’s relationship to 1 Samuel, and where to find viewing and content information.
What is House of David Season 1 about?
Prime Video describes the series as David discovering his destiny while navigating life at the court of the king he is destined to replace. The season begins with David shepherding outside Bethlehem, before his anointing and eventual confrontation with Goliath, according to the Los Angeles Times. It presents David’s ascent alongside Saul’s decline, with the biblical story shaped into a television drama.
Executive producer Jon Gunn told the Los Angeles Times, “We weren’t looking to make a religious show,” and said the creative aim was to tell “these humans in this moment living this story.” That is Gunn’s description of the show’s intention, rather than a claim about how every viewer will experience it.
How many episodes are in Season 1?
Prime Video lists eight episodes. The final two are titled “David and Goliath – Part 1” and “David and Goliath – Part 2”; the listing gives the eighth episode a runtime of 1 hour 1 minute and a date of April 2, 2025. Episode dates and catalog details can vary by territory, so check the Prime Video season page for the listing in your region.

How biblically accurate is House of David?
Christianity Today identifies 1 Samuel 15, 16, and 17 as the season’s central scriptural arc: Saul’s rejection, David’s anointing, and David’s defeat of Goliath. Those are the biblical story points at the center of the season, but the series is not a literal, episode-by-episode rendering of those chapters.
The show adds invented subplots and expands characterization. Some material draws on other biblical passages and later Jewish traditions, as Christianity Today’s discussion of the adaptation explains. A useful way to watch is to distinguish the core events in 1 Samuel from dramatic connective scenes and elaborations created for the series. Readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source can read 1 Samuel alongside the episodes.

Where can you watch it, and what content advisories are available?
Prime Video has an official season listing, but availability, subscription terms, and purchase options can differ by region and change over time. Check the storefront serving your location for current access and bonus material.
For episode-by-episode content information, the BBFC classification page lists strong violence in several episodes, with other advisories including threat, bloody images, and references to sexual violence. These are UK classifications, not universal ratings. Apple TV’s US listing displays 14+ and TV-14 metadata, but that platform marker is also specific to its regional catalog.
