It opened in the former Wyola RSL hall after a June 2023 announcement said it was due to open on 6 July that year. The opening date is historical; current menu details, hours and events may differ.
What is Honky Tonk Blues?
The venue was conceived around the feel of saloon-style dive bars along Gulf Coast highways in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Co-owner Ben Bell described the aim to PerthNow as creating “somewhere to go foot tapping (and) dancing … so we built a bar for that.” The reported ellipsis is part of the quotation.
That country-music identity remains central to how the venue presents itself. Visit Fremantle describes it as a country-music venue with live music and southern hospitality, while the City of Fremantle’s Spring 2023 visitor magazine promoted country beats, dancing and a cowboy-hat look. These are official visitor descriptions, not independent reviews.
What can you eat, drink and do there?
The venue’s current website describes bar snacks and toasties and says music continues through the night. It does not establish a dependable current gig schedule or a detailed current menu.

The opening-era menu and drinks report is more specific, but should not be treated as current: in June 2023, PerthNow reported plans for whiskey-focused cocktails, 12 taps of mostly American-sourced beer, pork crackling and popcorn, and comfort food curated by Nashville chef Kevin Allen. The report also quoted Bell saying, “In Honky Tonks, it’s simple,” and that wine could be served in a plastic or paper cup in some dive bars; it clarified that Fremantle’s venue would not serve wine that way.

A City of Fremantle council agenda dated 11 June 2025 identifies the property as part of the state-registered West End heritage curtilage and the municipal heritage inventory entry for the RSL Club at 81–83 High Street. The agenda described the rear ground-floor tenancy as operating as Honky Tonk Blues under a tavern approval, with a public-building capacity of 300 persons at that time. That administrative figure is not a guarantee of the current visitor limit or capacity under a later configuration.
