Ray William Johnson built his early YouTube fame with Equals Three: a twice-weekly show that paired viral videos with his comedic commentary inside a consistent, repeatable format. The clips brought changing material; Johnson’s voice and the familiar structure gave viewers a reason to come back.
How Equals Three turned viral clips into a recurring show
Johnson did not need to create the internet’s viral videos to build an audience around them. His distinctive contribution was to make watching and discussing those clips the premise of a regular comedy program.

In a 2011 Forbes interview, Johnson said he uploaded twice a week and described the format this way: “The idea behind ‘Equals Three’ was to combine video blogging and viral videos and place them within a rigid format, so that only the actual blogging and viral videos would change each episode.” The videos changed, but the show’s basic promise stayed recognizable.
That formula helped make viral material feel like an episode rather than a one-off compilation. Viewers could arrive for the clips and stay for Johnson’s reactions, jokes, and delivery. A reliable schedule and a stable format also made the show easy to revisit and share.

How big did the channel get?
Equals Three became YouTube’s most-subscribed channel and, according to the secondary biographical account, the first to reach five million subscribers in 2011. That account says the channel held the most-subscribed position for 564 days, from June 2011 to January 2013.
| Milestone | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | 5 million subscribers | Reported as the first YouTube channel to reach that milestone by the secondary biographical account. |
| 2013 | More than 10 million subscribers and 2 billion views | Channel totals reported by the same account. |
| September 3, 2026 | 18.6 million subscribers and 14.9 billion views | A dated snapshot attributed to that secondary account, not an independently verified live count. |
The figures show the scale of the channel across time, but they are not all measurements from the same date or source. In particular, the September 2026 totals should be read as that account’s dated snapshot, not as a real-time YouTube statistic.

Why did Johnson leave Equals Three?
Johnson left Maker Studios in 2012 amid a reported contract dispute and subsequently worked through his own studio. Accounts of the disagreement describe disputed deal terms; those reports should not be treated as an adjudicated finding.
In March 2014, Johnson stopped hosting Equals Three. The series did not end with his departure: it continued with other hosts. The distinction matters—the end of Johnson’s role as its presenter was not the end of the show itself.

What did he do after the show?
Johnson’s career after his regular Equals Three hosting included several different formats rather than one continuous successor. He pursued comedy and scripted series, developed the animated music project Your Favorite Martian, and later made short-form true-crime storytelling.
These projects show a shift in format and subject—from reacting to circulating clips in a recurring long-form episode to scripted comedy, music, and concise crime stories. The available accounts document that evolution, but do not establish one definitive reason for each change.

What explains his early success?
- Timely source material: Viral clips gave each episode something new to discuss without requiring the show to abandon its premise.
- A recognizable host: Johnson’s commentary made the videos part of a distinct comedy experience, not simply a collection of clips.
- A repeatable structure: The recurring format made the show easy to recognize, while the twice-weekly schedule gave viewers a cadence to expect.
- Room to experiment: After his most visible hosting role, Johnson moved among projects and formats rather than relying exclusively on the same show.
Johnson’s 2011 comments also reveal how he thought about the audience relationship. “What is most valuable to me is the notion that I have the privilege of entertaining millions of people at a time. Most product placements detract from that entertainment experience,” he told Forbes. It is a statement of his outlook at that time, not proof of how every later project was financed.
