Vinod Kumar Shukla received the 59th Jnanpith Award, announced on March 22, 2025, for the 2024 award year. The poet and novelist was the first writer from Chhattisgarh to receive India’s highest literary honor. Shukla died on December 23, 2025; the official condolence release did not state a cause of death.

Who won the 59th Jnanpith Award?

Vinod Kumar Shukla was named the recipient on March 22, 2025. The award was for 2024, rather than the calendar year in which the announcement was made. The Press Information Bureau described him as the first writer from Chhattisgarh to receive the Jnanpith. The Bharatiya Jnanpith awards page subsequently listed the 60th award, for 2025, as awarded to Tamil writer R. Vairamuthu.

Shukla was born in 1937 in Rajnandgaon district, in what is now Chhattisgarh. The Press Information Bureau announcement and Akashvani’s report of the announcement place his work across poetry, novels, short stories, and writing for children.

Why was Vinod Kumar Shukla honored?

Official descriptions of Shukla’s writing emphasize simplicity and deep sensitivity, including its attention to ordinary people. Those qualities are critical judgments, not a formula that captures every reader’s response. His writing’s distinctive language is also a central part of how commentators have explained its significance.

In a report published the day after the announcement, The Indian Express quoted writer Avinash Mishra on the importance of language in Shukla’s poetry. Hindi professor Pallav Kumar Nandwana described Shukla’s focus on ordinary people and their struggles. Shukla himself reflected on the gap between experience and what he managed to put into words: “I’ve seen a lot (in life), heard a lot and felt a lot but I could write only a little.”

After the award announcement, the PIB quoted him saying: “This is a very big award. I never thought I would receive this award.”

Which books did Vinod Kumar Shukla write?

These works offer entry points into different parts of Shukla’s writing. Titles are given in the transliterations used by the cited sources; transliteration and spelling can vary between editions.

Work Form and context
Lagbhag Jai Hind (1971) His first poetry collection, according to the PIB profile.
Naukar Ki Kameez (1979) A novel later adapted into a film by Mani Kaul. The Indian Express report describes it as the story of a clerk compelled to submit to professional hierarchies.
Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi (1997) The novel for which Shukla received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1999, as recorded in the PIB profile.
Khilega To Dekhenge A novel. The Indian Express describes a teacher arriving in a village populated by eccentric residents.

Where can a new reader start?

Choose by the kind of writing you want to explore, rather than assuming that one book represents his whole body of work:

  • For poetry: Start with Lagbhag Jai Hind, identified as his first collection. Its publication date is 1971.
  • For a novel about work and hierarchy: Consider Naukar Ki Kameez, the novel described by the Indian Express as centering on a clerk and professional power.
  • For a novel recognized with another major literary award: Look for Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi, associated with Shukla’s 1999 Sahitya Akademi Award.
  • For stories or children’s writing: Akashvani names story collections and confirms he also wrote for children; check the specific edition for its intended audience and language.

The cited reports establish these titles and categories, not current availability, formats, or verified translation editions.
