Maa Lakshmi, also known as Shri, is widely associated with prosperity, fortune, auspiciousness and well-being. In Vaishnava traditions she is Vishnu’s consort, while familiar images of her often include a lotus and, in some forms, coins or elephants. Lakshmi worship is strongly connected with Diwali in many households, though Hindu beliefs and observances differ across communities.
Who is Maa Lakshmi?
Lakshmi, often called Shri, is a Hindu goddess associated with prosperity and good fortune. The idea of prosperity in the religious accounts considered here extends beyond money: a temple education page explains Shri through auspiciousness, well-being and a flourishing life. Marathi Vishwakosh’s entry on Lakshmi also associates her with wealth. These are descriptions from particular sources and traditions, not a single definition that exhausts how all Hindus understand her.

Is Lakshmi only the goddess of money?
No. Wealth is one important association, but it is too narrow to capture the broader meanings attached to Lakshmi. The temple account links her with auspiciousness and well-being, ideas that encompass a flourishing life rather than financial gain alone. In household devotion, that broader sense helps explain why Lakshmi may be approached as a source of good fortune and welfare.
What is Lakshmi’s relationship to Vishnu?
In Vaishnava accounts, Lakshmi is Vishnu’s consort. ISKCON Educational Services describes her accompanying Vishnu in his avatar descents: she appears as Sita alongside Rama and as Rukmini alongside Krishna. A UK temple education page likewise describes her as Vishnu’s consort and shakti. These are theological accounts within particular Hindu traditions; they should not be treated as a complete description of every Hindu community’s beliefs.

How is Lakshmi commonly depicted?
There is no single checklist that every image must follow. Common motifs in the educational sources include a lotus, four arms, coins and elephants, with details varying by form and depiction.
- Lotus: Lakshmi is often shown seated or standing on a lotus, and may hold one. ISKCON Educational Services also describes a water pot in some depictions.
- Four arms and gestures: Familiar images may show four arms, with one hand offering a blessing and another associated with coins.
- Elephants: Elephants feature in some forms, including Gaja-Lakshmi. The temple source offers devotional interpretations of these motifs; they are religious explanations, not universal rules for interpreting every image.
These recurring features help viewers recognize familiar representations of Lakshmi, but artistic and devotional forms can differ.
Why is Lakshmi worship associated with Diwali?
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is a major festival association for Lakshmi. The Government of India’s tourism account describes households worshipping Lakshmi and Ganesha with idols, flowers, sweets, coins and lamps. A Press Information Bureau release dated December 10, 2025, describes Deepavali as falling on Kartik Amavasya, typically in October or November, and says Lakshmi is believed to visit illuminated homes. The release describes Lakshmi-Ganesha puja on the third day of its five-day sequence.

These accounts describe practices and beliefs, not a uniform observance followed by every Hindu household. Diwali’s stories and rituals vary across regions and communities; a specific festival date or puja time should be checked for the relevant year and location. The PIB release also quotes Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat: “The Festival of Lights is a living tradition carried forward by communities, continuously recreated across generations, supporting social cohesion and contributing to development.”

Diwali is a prominent occasion, but it is not the only one named in the sources. ISKCON Educational Services notes Friday and Navaratri as worship occasions, while a UK temple page mentions Sharad Purnima in some family traditions. These examples reflect particular teaching and family contexts; they are not a universal calendar for Lakshmi worship.
