Peter Jackson’s fortune grew from filmmaking into a group of connected creative and property businesses—and a major technology sale. The headline figure behind the story is not one simple payout: Unity paid US$1.625 billion for Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology and engineering talent in 2021, while Jackson retained a majority-owned visual-effects company, Wētā FX. Forbes has since published differing estimates of his net worth, which are estimates rather than audited accounts.
How did Peter Jackson build his fortune?
Jackson’s wealth story has several stages: success as a filmmaker, the growth of businesses serving film production, the 2021 sale of Weta Digital’s technology operation to Unity, and reported property holdings. These pieces are related, but they are not interchangeable. A company’s sale price is not the same as its owner’s proceeds, and neither is the same as a net-worth estimate.
Film work created the foundation
Jackson’s long-running collaboration with New Zealand’s film-effects community helped build an ecosystem around his productions. Wētā Workshop’s company history says it began in 1987 as RT Effects, founded by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger. In 1993, the founders and colleagues including Jackson and Jamie Selkirk joined to establish a film and television effects company. The Wētā companies contributed to Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy over seven years, according to the Workshop’s account.
That history helps explain how filmmaking led to durable production capabilities and businesses, rather than a fortune attributable only to directing fees. It does not mean Jackson owns every company that carries the Wētā name.

What did Unity buy for US$1.625 billion?
Unity Technologies announced that it completed its acquisition of Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology and engineering talent on December 1, 2021. The announced consideration was US$1.625 billion in a combination of cash and stock. That is the transaction value—not a disclosed personal payment to Jackson.
Forbes Australia’s 2025 celebrity-billionaire list separately said Jackson netted almost US$1 billion from the sale. That reported net proceeds figure is distinct from Unity’s headline consideration. The two figures should not be treated as equivalent: the transaction involved assets and talent, and the available reporting does not provide a complete accounting of Jackson’s personal proceeds or the deal’s full ownership and financial details.
What did Jackson retain after the sale?
The deal separated Weta Digital’s technology operation from its visual-effects artists. Unity’s announcement said the Academy Award-winning VFX teams would continue in a standalone entity, majority owned by Jackson. In March 2022, the company announced the name Wētā FX and described itself as “a standalone company, majority owned by Sir Peter Jackson, creating ground-breaking VFX, animation and original content.” The company said it remained the same artists and company, operating under the new name.

- Halloween 3-Movie Collection (Blu-ray + Digital)
Unity acquired the tools, pipeline, technology and engineering talent; Wētā FX continued as the VFX, animation and original-content business. The distinction matters: the transaction was not the sale of every business associated with Jackson or the Wētā name.
Wētā Workshop is a separate company
Wētā Workshop is not Wētā FX. Its company history says it remains independently owned by co-founders Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, who took sole ownership in 2022. The Workshop traces the growth of its licensed collectibles business to 2001, but that activity does not make it a Jackson holding.
What are the published estimates of Jackson’s net worth?
Forbes Australia estimated Jackson’s net worth at US$1.7 billion in its 2025 celebrity-billionaire list. A Forbes profile estimate dated October 2, 2026 put the figure at US$1.9 billion. These are publisher estimates from different dates, not audited personal financial statements; the difference should not be read as a precise measure of how much Jackson gained or lost.

In 2023, The New Zealand Herald reported that property holdings connected to Jackson exceeded NZ$350 million, describing film-business properties, studios, warehouses and residences. That is a dated reported valuation with its own scope, not a current total for Jackson’s wealth and not a figure to add to Forbes’s estimate.

The reporting also identified Park Road Post as Jackson’s post-production business and referred to Wētā FX. The plans show continued activity around the film-production base; they do not establish a value for the developments or a consolidated property portfolio today.

Why the “Wētā” names are easy to confuse
The businesses have distinct roles and ownership. Unity acquired a technology and engineering operation; Wētā FX continued as a majority Jackson-owned VFX company; Wētā Workshop is independently owned by its co-founders. WingNut and WingNut PM belong to a separate thread of the story, connected to Jackson and Fran Walsh’s group and reported property activity.
- Unity: Acquired Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology and engineering talent in the 2021 transaction.
- Wētā FX: The standalone visual-effects, animation and original-content company, described by the company as majority owned by Jackson.
- Wētā Workshop: A separate company independently owned by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger.
- WingNut PM: Described by the Herald as the property arm of Jackson and Fran Walsh’s WingNut Group.
- Park Road Post: Identified by the Herald as Jackson’s post-production business.
What the billion-dollar story does—and does not—show
Jackson’s wealth is best understood as the result of filmmaking success combined with businesses and assets built around production, a high-value technology transaction, a retained stake in Wētā FX, and reported property interests. Public figures offer snapshots, not a complete financial account. The Unity price is not Jackson’s personal payout, property estimates are not net worth, and Forbes’s estimates are not audited measurements.
