In this excerpt from Shirish Khare’s Hindi book Nadi Sinduri, the family cow Kallo has been sold. In the early 1990s, as she prepares to leave for her new owners, the family tells young Shirish to spend time with her. The scene turns an ordinary household change into a child’s farewell.
What happens in the excerpt
Kallo, the family’s cow, is to go to new owners after being sold. The immediate focus is the time young Shirish is asked to spend with her before she leaves. Rather than presenting a broad account of rural life, the passage is anchored in this particular separation: a familiar animal is leaving the family, and a child is given a last chance to be with her.

How the scene fits into Nadi Sinduri
Aaj Tak’s 2023 review describes Nadi Sinduri as a collection of 13 stories connected to Madanpur village, its culture, politics, communities, and people. In an introduction reproduced by the review, Khare frames the writing as memoir-like recollection rooted in rural life, particularly the years 1992–99, and says the Sinduri River connects the stories directly or indirectly.
Khare’s introduction, as reproduced by Aaj Tak, states: “सिंदूरी नदी के किनारे मदनपुर कोई काल्पनिक नहीं बल्कि एक वास्तविक गांव का नाम है.” This means, in translation, “Madanpur, on the banks of the Sinduri River, is not imaginary but the name of a real village.” The claim that the village and events are based on reality—and that most village personalities retain their names—is Khare’s account of his material, not independent verification of the village’s history.
#1 Best Overall
The review’s description places the collection amid village social hierarchy and change, relations between communities, local culture, and the draw and pressure of the wider world nearby. Kallo’s departure offers a close, personal point of entry into that larger setting without standing in for the whole book.
