Scroll.in’s Hindi passage, titled “द सेकेंड सेक्स का एक अंश” (“an excerpt from The Second Sex”), is an excerpt from Simone de Beauvoir’s book—not the complete text. The August 6, 2024 page credits Monica Singh with translating it from the French original, Le Deuxième Sexe, and names Vani Prakashan as the publisher of the Hindi translation. The passage considers women’s position as “other,” the limits of female freedom, and the need for mutual recognition between people.
What this Hindi excerpt is about
The Scroll.in page presents a passage from The Second Sex, de Beauvoir’s work on women’s position in society. Its framing describes the book as examining “स्त्री की स्वतन्त्रता की सीमाओं” (“the limits of female freedom”). The excerpt’s argument is that woman has historically been positioned as “other” in relation to man, who is treated as the default or central subject. This is the passage’s philosophical framing, not a standalone demonstration of historical facts.
It also examines the tension between individual freedom and recognition between people: one person’s sovereignty cannot, in the excerpt’s account, be understood apart from how others recognize that person as a subject. The passage is a point of entry into those ideas; it does not reproduce the entire book or establish where the excerpt falls within its full structure.
Who translated and published the Hindi edition?
Scroll.in credits Monica Singh as translator and says the Hindi passage was translated from the French original, Le Deuxième Sexe. It names Vani Prakashan as the publisher. A 2021 French Institute in India press release also identifies Singh as the Hindi translator, describing the translation as forthcoming at that time; that announcement is historical context, not confirmation of present-day availability.
