“Titanic” was filmed at Baja Studios, a purpose-built complex near Popotla in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California—not on a set in the town center. The production brought a substantial but temporary burst of work and spending. In the years that followed, the studio hosted other films and a Titanic-themed attraction opened and closed. Rosarito still promotes its film history, but the record does not show a lasting townwide boom or establish that the studio is open to visitors today.

Where was “Titanic” filmed in Mexico?

20th Century Fox built Baja Studios in 1996 near Rosarito, on the Baja California coast. Tourism materials place the complex near Popotla and describe its large filming tanks. The purpose-built location gave the production room for water-based filming; it was not a replica of the ship planted in Rosarito’s town center. Baja California tourism information

What did the production bring to Rosarito?

At the time, filming filled hotel rooms and restaurant tables during the off-season and created work in construction and production support. A 1998 Los Angeles Times report said local officials estimated the production contributed $10 million to $15 million to the local economy. The same report said officials estimated as many as 300 residents found work as carpenters, drivers, cooks and helpers. Those were contemporary estimates reported by the newspaper, not audited totals. Los Angeles Times, 1998

The opportunity was not necessarily permanent. Some workers went back to their previous jobs after filming; one welder told the newspaper his wages had fallen when his production work ended. Rosarito’s tourism delegate, Antonio Escobedo, described the moment hopefully in 1998: “This is going to be a permanent mark.” That remark captures local expectations, not proof that the production’s economic gains lasted.

There was friction as well as opportunity

The 1998 report also recorded complaints from nearby fishermen, who alleged that the studio’s seawater recycling polluted the area and harmed fishing, and disputed a strip of waterfront. A leader in the fishing settlement told the newspaper the contamination issue had abated by then. That account documents a dispute at the time; it does not establish a present-day environmental condition or the dispute’s final outcome. Los Angeles Times, 1998

What happened to the studio and the Titanic attraction?

Foxploration opened, then closed

After a Titanic museum drew visitors, Fox opened Foxploration as a movie park in 2001, hoping to attract families and encourage off-season tourism. Fox executives told the Los Angeles Times that the museum had drawn about 180,000 visitors. That figure refers to the museum before the park opened, not Foxploration’s annual attendance. A 2012 report said the Titanic-inspired park had closed. Los Angeles Times, 2001 Los Angeles Times, 2012

Film work continued, but not as a constant boom

Baja Studios went on to host productions including Pearl Harbor and Master and Commander. But the 2012 Los Angeles Times account described filmmaking at the studio as having nearly stopped for a period before a new feature brought activity back. Rosarito’s film history, then, includes later productions and a pronounced slowdown—not an uninterrupted stream of work. Los Angeles Times, 2012

Is the Titanic set in Rosarito still open to visitors?

The sources establish the studio’s history and the former attraction’s closure, but do not verify current studio operations, public tours or visitor access. Rosarito tourism materials still promote the area’s cinematic past and destination appeal; that promotion should not be taken as confirmation that Baja Studios can be visited. Rosarito’s legacy of “Titanic”

“Titanic” put Rosarito on the map as a film location and brought a meaningful, if uneven and time-limited, wave of local economic activity. The studio’s later work and Foxploration’s opening extended that association, while the attraction’s closure and the studio’s slowdown complicate any claim of lasting transformation. What remains clear is the town’s continuing film identity—not a verified permanent economic boom or confirmed public access to the set.
