Tobey Maguire’s reputation for being difficult appears to have grown from a few widely repeated stories, not from verified evidence of a broad Hollywood consensus. The clearest documented episode is a 2003 dispute over his return for another Spider-Man film; later accounts tied the narrative to alleged behavior around high-stakes poker games. Those stories can help explain the reputation, but they do not establish a verdict about Maguire’s character or how he treats coworkers generally.
The 2003 Spider-Man dispute became a key part of the story
A contemporary Los Angeles Times report published May 11, 2003 said Maguire had been dismissed from the next Spider-Man installment and later returned after intervention by Hollywood figures. The report presented competing accounts of a contract and agency conflict. That makes it useful evidence for what happened around a particular casting decision, but not a settled finding that Maguire was generally difficult to work with.
The distinction matters: disputes over contracts, representation, and a major production can produce a public narrative about an actor, but the existence of a dispute alone does not show how the person behaved toward colleagues on set.
Poker stories added a second strand to the reputation
Later coverage connected Maguire’s reputation to accounts of his behavior in high-stakes poker games, including Molly Bloom’s recollections. Bloom’s experience was later dramatized in Molly’s Game. The film is an adaptation, not independent confirmation that every exchange or incident shown on screen happened exactly as depicted.

Retrospectives in Entertainment.ie (2018) and El País (July 27, 2024) connect the poker narrative to the broader public image. They are secondary accounts; the claims should remain attributed to the people and reporting involved rather than treated as a comprehensive record of Maguire’s conduct.
What Maguire has said about choosing projects
In a 2015 Nylon interview, Maguire discussed how his interest in a story affects his experience of making it: “When you’re working with people you like and stories you like, then no matter how difficult it is, there’s a kind of excitement and passion for what you’re doing.” He was talking about his connection to projects, not admitting to mistreating coworkers.

That interview offers context about his selectiveness and motivation, but it does not explain or verify the specific claims behind the difficult-to-work-with label.

A brief TIME interview from September 10, 2015 characterized Maguire’s work ethic positively. That is a counterpoint, not definitive proof against other accounts. Taken together, the sources support a more limited conclusion: a prominent reported production dispute and later poker-related stories helped circulate the reputation, while the available material does not establish that the industry broadly shares it.
Rank #3
No reliable statistic quantifies how many collaborators consider Maguire difficult, and the available reporting is not enough to responsibly identify actors said to have had trouble with him. The reputation is therefore best understood as a public narrative built around specific, unevenly documented episodes—not as a verified general judgment of his character.
