Scooter Braun’s often-cited $400 million fortune is best understood as a 2021 estimate of what he personally netted from selling Ithaca Holdings to HYBE—not as a verified statement of his current net worth. The deal’s headline-scale value, Braun’s disclosed HYBE shares, and the estimate of his personal proceeds are different figures.
What the $400 million figure actually refers to
A June 2021 Variety interview republished by Yahoo reported that Braun was believed to have personally netted more than $400 million in the Ithaca-HYBE transaction. That is a media estimate, not an audited disclosure or a current net-worth calculation.
The distinction matters because HYBE’s purchase involved a much larger company-level payment, while public reporting identifies only some elements of Braun’s individual consideration. The figures should not be treated as interchangeable:
| Figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About $1.045 billion | HYBE America’s payment to Ithaca’s existing shareholders and creditors at closing | The May 7, 2021 closing payment reported in HYBE’s Korean exchange filing; included merger consideration and debt repayment. |
| About $86.2 million | HYBE shares attributed to Braun | Associated Press reported approximately 462,380 shares, valued at the time of the transaction. This was a disclosed component, not the full amount Braun received. |
| More than $400 million | Estimated personal proceeds for Braun | A 2021 Variety interview republished by Yahoo described this as a belief; it was not an audited figure. |
HYBE’s filing specifies a total closing payment of $1,044,951,796.87, including approximately $927 million in merger consideration and about $118 million used to repay debt. The payment went to Ithaca’s existing shareholders and creditors; it was not Braun’s personal take-home amount. HYBE’s April 2021 announcement described the acquisition scope but did not give a headline purchase price.

How Braun built the businesses behind the sale
He started with artist management
Braun founded SB Projects in 2007 and discovered Justin Bieber on YouTube in 2008, according to the Associated Press. Braun helped develop Bieber’s profile through social media. SB Projects also encompassed management, a publishing venture, and Schoolboy Records. The foundation of the later portfolio was therefore an entertainment business built around artists and their careers, rather than a single manager’s salary.
Ithaca expanded that base into a portfolio
Braun formed Ithaca Holdings to hold a broader set of entertainment and investment interests. HYBE’s announcement described Ithaca’s reach across music, technology, film, television, brands, and culture, and identified SB Projects and Big Machine Label Group among its properties. HYBE’s exchange filing also lists operations and subsidiaries in artist management, publishing, content production, record labels, and television and OTT content.

A 2016 Fortune profile described Ithaca as an investment fund backing companies including Spotify and Uber, as well as a holding company for SB Projects and interests in music-management companies. Fortune noted that Braun declined to discuss some arrangements; the public account does not establish his ownership percentages, investment returns, or personal income from each business.
Big Machine was part of the deal, but personal profit is not established
Ithaca acquired Big Machine Label Group in 2019. The following year, it sold Taylor Swift’s master recordings to an investment fund, the AP reported. These events form part of Ithaca’s business history, but the cited public reporting does not establish how much Braun personally profited from either transaction. HYBE’s announcement said Scott Borchetta would remain Big Machine Label Group’s CEO after the acquisition.

HYBE’s exchange filing reported that Ithaca had $400.739 million in assets and $131.727 million in revenue in 2020. Those are historical company figures, not Braun’s personal assets, earnings, or proceeds. Assets are also not the same as revenue or the value of an owner’s stake.
The filing’s closing breakdown offers a firmer account of what HYBE America paid than the rounded descriptions that appeared elsewhere. Braun’s official biography now characterizes the 2021 purchase as $1.2 billion, while the filing records approximately $1.045 billion paid at closing. These are different descriptions or bases; the biography’s retrospective figure should not be combined with the filing’s closing payment as if they were the same measure.

The cited sources do not establish a verified current personal net worth for Braun. They do not provide a complete balance sheet showing his taxes, liquidity, retained equity, other assets and liabilities, or subsequent investment performance. Accordingly, the $400 million estimate cannot be treated as a confirmed present-day total.
His roles have also changed over time. The AP reported that Braun became sole CEO of HYBE America in January 2023. His official biography currently describes him as Chairman of Ithaka Management Group, a HYBE Senior Advisor and board member, and a general partner at TQ Ventures. These descriptions establish professional roles, not personal wealth.
