Games Workshop says he brings “his lore expertise” to the role, but it has not said that he leads formal lore audits. The live-action project remains in development, and a separate Deathwatch animated series is also being developed for Amazon.
What does Henry Cavill actually do?
Games Workshop’s 16 December 2022 announcement named Cavill as both a star and an executive producer. It described him as a well-known Warhammer superfan and said: “He’s bringing his lore expertise to the mantle of Executive Producer, and his sword arm to the starring role.” Games Workshop’s announcement did not describe a formal review process or say that he leads “lore audits.”

That distinction matters: his publicly stated expertise is part of his executive-producer role, but the sources do not specify his day-to-day duties, creative authority, or responsibility for approving scripts. Cavill said in the same announcement, “I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me.”
Is the live-action project still happening?
Yes. Games Workshop’s 2025–26 annual report says the live-action project continues in line with its agreement with Amazon. Amazon has brought on United Artists and Mike Flanagan; initial outlines are complete, and scripts are expected to come next. Cavill and Vertigo remain involved. How the project reached this stage
- 16 December 2022: Games Workshop and Amazon announced they were working to bring Warhammer 40,000 to screen, with Cavill attached as star and executive producer.
- 10 December 2024: Games Workshop said it had finalized an agreement with Amazon Content Services LLC for Warhammer 40,000 films and television series, along with associated merchandising rights. It also said the creative guidelines had been agreed. Games Workshop’s agreement announcement
- 10 December 2024: Warhammer Community said story synopses and project ordering had been established, and that “Project One” was entering development proper, with scripts the next step. How is the Deathwatch animation different?
The Deathwatch project is a separate animated series in development for release through Amazon—not another name for the live-action project. Games Workshop’s annual report identifies John Orloff as its writer and Blur as its animation studio. Variety’s 4 August 2026 report adds that Dave Wilson is a co-creator and director, and that Cavill is among the animation’s executive producers. The available announcements do not establish a shared plot, crossover, or release order between the two projects.

When will either project arrive?
No premiere date is confirmed in these sources. In its December 2024 update, Games Workshop said of the first screen project: “It’ll be some years.” The later annual report gives development milestones, not a release window. There is no basis in these announcements for a more specific prediction.

The franchise spans tabletop miniatures and games, sourcebooks, novels, animation, video games, and licensed material. Those are ways to explore the setting, not prerequisites established for watching either adaptation. A miniature kit, novel, or sourcebook can be a companion to the screen projects, but the sources do not identify a particular book as a tie-in.

Warhammer Community also said in December 2024 that the franchise’s episode of Secret Level was available on Amazon Prime Video. That episode is separate from the new live-action and Deathwatch projects; current availability may vary by territory.
