What did “last surviving original member” mean?
Fambrough was described as the last surviving member of the Spinners’ original lineup before his death. The group formed in 1954 in Ferndale, just north of Detroit, initially under the name the Domingoes. It joined Motown in 1964.
How did Henry Fambrough shape the Spinners’ story?
Fambrough’s career with the group spanned its beginnings and its rise through Motown and Atlantic Records. Among the Spinners’ best-known recordings are “It’s a Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” and “The Rubberband Man.”

From Motown to the charts
“It’s a Shame,” co-written by Stevie Wonder, became the group’s first major Motown hit, reaching No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970. After the Spinners signed with Atlantic Records, they scored another major success with “Then Came You,” featuring Dionne Warwick, which reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1974.
The Associated Press reported that the group received six Grammy Award nominations and had 18 platinum and gold albums. Those figures refer to the Spinners, not to personal awards or certifications for Fambrough alone.

What was Fambrough’s connection to Motown Studio A?
In May 2023, Fambrough visited Motown’s Studio A in Detroit during a ceremony connected with the donation of Spinners performance outfits to the Motown Museum. Remembering the studio, he said, “I used to dream about this place.” The Associated Press reported that he also recalled having to convince his wife that the studio was where he went for 3 a.m. rehearsals and recording sessions.

The Spinners were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. The Associated Press account names Fambrough, Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippé Wynne, and John Edwards among the inductees. The Hall’s official Spinners profile records the group’s induction.
