Kelly Carlson said she stopped taking acting work because she moved away from Los Angeles with her husband, whose Navy work was based near San Diego. She described the move as her own choice—not a forced exit—and left open the possibility of acting again.
Why did Kelly Carlson leave acting?
In an Instagram Live in May 2020, Carlson answered a fan who asked whether she was still acting and why she had given it up. “I’m not acting right now,” she said, explaining that she lived outside Los Angeles because of her husband’s Navy work. She said acting required her to be in Los Angeles, while the couple lived in the San Diego area. Fox News reported her remarks on May 28, 2020.

Carlson was explicit that her husband had not asked her to stop working: “And it’s not that he asked me to leave. He didn’t at all.” She said she saw value in his work and chose to move with him. She also said “nothing bad happened or anything like that” in Hollywood and that she had loved her life there. Her explanation points to location and family circumstances, not a firing, scandal, or feud.
When did she move away from Los Angeles?
In a 2021 Fox News appearance, Carlson said she left Los Angeles in 2015 because her husband was based in Coronado and they needed to be closer. Just Jared reported that account on May 1, 2021. The year is Carlson’s later recollection, rather than an independently verified move date. She described being a military wife as a new and enjoyable experience.

Did Kelly Carlson retire permanently?
Her 2020 words were “I’m not acting right now,” and she said she might return one day. That is not a formal announcement of permanent retirement. A later retrospective reported that she had a role in the 2020 film The Reason, after a 2013 TV movie; Best Life covered the credit in 2023.
In 2021, Carlson said it would take “a really big deal” to bring her back to Hollywood. The same coverage reported that she and her husband made knives and sheaths for law-enforcement and military recipients; that detail does not establish a retail product line or endorsement.

How does this relate to her Nip/Tuck career?
Carlson is best known for playing Kimber Henry on FX’s Nip/Tuck. Fox News described the series as running six seasons, from 2003 to 2010, and reported that Carlson was somewhat upset when her character was killed off. That career event is separate from the reason she later gave for stepping away: her move away from Los Angeles for her husband’s Navy work.
