Henry Cavill said he and Anya Chalotra asked producers to change Geralt and Yennefer’s Season 2 reunion so it played as an emotional moment rather than a sexual one. The scene takes place at the Temple of Melitele; Cavill’s explanation was that, after each character believed the other dead, a sexual encounter did not feel true to them.
Which ‘The Witcher’ scene did they want to change?
The scene is Geralt and Yennefer’s reunion at the Temple of Melitele in Ellander, in Season 2, episode 6, “Dear Friend.” Geralt believes Yennefer died at the Battle of Sodden Hill. When they meet again, their surprise and relief lead to a kiss, which Ciri interrupts; the three later share tea.

In a December 2021 interview with SYFY WIRE, Cavill said the scene was originally written to go further sexually. He described the change as a discussion with Chalotra and the producers, with the actors advocating for a different emphasis.
Why did Cavill say the sexual version felt wrong?
Cavill’s explanation was about the characters and the emotional circumstances of the reunion. Geralt and Yennefer had each believed the other was gone; for Cavill, the scene needed to show them wanting to be together and recognizing one another again, not shift into sex.

“We wanted it to be emotional rather than sexual,” Cavill said. He also explained that the more sexual version did not fit the characters: “That’s not how they behave.” He described the desired result as “an emotional beat rather than anything else.” These are Cavill’s words about the discussion and the scene.
What is known about Chalotra’s role in the discussion?
Cavill said he and Chalotra raised their concern with the producers and argued for the emotional approach. The detailed account of that conversation comes from Cavill’s interview; the available sources do not include a separate statement from Chalotra confirming the specifics of this scene’s discussion.

In a 2021 Observer interview, Chalotra described Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship more broadly as “animalistic and raw and sexy.” She also spoke positively about working with Cavill, calling him empathetic and honest. That context speaks to their onscreen dynamic and collaboration, but it is not an independent account of how this particular scene was changed.

The moment remains intimate: Geralt and Yennefer kiss when they reunite, but the scene does not become the more sexual encounter Cavill said was on the page. The emphasis is on their recognition of each other and the interrupted reunion, with Ciri’s arrival changing the moment’s course.

The available reporting describes an actor-led argument about character behavior and tone. It does not establish a dispute with the director or provide further details about the production process. The television series is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, but the interviews cited here do not identify a specific book passage as the source for this scene.
