Dove Cameron has said she legally changed her name to honor her father, who called her Dove, Dovey and Dovely. She was born Chloe Celeste Hosterman; the name Dove became both her legal name and the one she generally uses professionally.
Why did Dove Cameron change her name?
Cameron has described the change as a tribute to her father, not simply a professional rebrand. In a 2014 interview with Glancer Magazine, she said he used to call her “Dove and Dovey and Dovely” and explained that changing her name was “my sort of way of honoring him.”

Her father died around the period she changed her name, according to Cameron’s account in that interview. She said, “I changed my name when I was 14 years old.” A Sony Music Japan profile, however, describes the formal change as taking place after his death in 2017. The sources differ in how they frame the timing, so a precise filing date is not established.
What was Dove Cameron’s birth name?
She was born Chloe Celeste Hosterman. A 2022 Alternative Press profile identifies that as her birth name and says she legally changed it to Dove to honor the nickname her father gave her.

How did she change her name legally?
In a WIRED Autocomplete interview, Cameron was asked how she changed her name legally and replied, “At the courthouse. I raised my hand and everything.” That is her brief, humorous description, not a detailed account of the legal process or the date of the filing.
Does she still use the name Chloe?
Yes. In the same WIRED interview, Cameron said that most people close to her call her Chloe, while most people at work call her Dove because using both names had become confusing. That personal distinction does not change the fact that she has described Dove as her legal name.
