A love story Bonnie had to fight for
Bonnie’s romance with Enzo mattered partly because of what came before it. She had repeatedly risked herself for other people, and executive producer Julie Plec described her as someone who had suffered and done extraordinary things. Plec hoped Bonnie would have a long, happy life; she also called Bonnie and Enzo her favorite relationship of the preceding couple of years. In her words, “That’s been my absolute favorite relationship over the last couple years.” Access Hollywood reported Plec’s comments on March 9, 2017.

Plec described their love as fierce even amid tragedy and loss. That contrast is a strong reason the pairing can linger in viewers’ minds: Bonnie’s happiness felt earned, which makes its interruption feel especially painful. That is an interpretation of the story’s emotional effect, not a measured claim about how all viewers feel.
Enzo’s death breaks the relationship’s future
Enzo dies before the series finale. In its contemporaneous coverage, TVLine reported that Stefan kills him and described Bonnie’s anguish. The loss leaves her grieving just as the couple’s future has become imaginable.

Michael Malarkey, who played Enzo, later said he had been prepared for different possible endings after Plec discussed ideas with cast members. The possibility of multiple outcomes does not change what aired: Enzo dies, and Bonnie has to face life without him in the usual, physical sense.
Bonnie moves forward, with Enzo still near
The finale does not restore Bonnie and Enzo to a shared life. Instead, it gives Bonnie a future of her own and presents their connection as enduring beyond his death. Plec said, “I think it’s a beautiful relationship and it’s one of those relationships that will stay with Bonnie for all eternity, even as she grows old, possibly, and dies.” She later described their bond as otherworldly. A 2022 TVLine retrospective describes Bonnie making good on her promise to Enzo to see the world, with his spirit never far behind. The ending holds two ideas together: Bonnie gets to keep living, and Enzo remains part of her emotional life. That is romantic closure in a spiritual sense, but not the conventional happy ending of the couple growing old together in person.
Other imagined futures keep Bonnie’s ending open to debate
Plec also considered a different path for Bonnie: a future with Matt, including partnership, children, and a family. She framed that as a possibility, not the ending the show ultimately chose. Plec’s view was that losing an epic love did not mean Bonnie should be without love: “If you lose your epic love, you’re not meant to go without love.” The finale instead emphasized Bonnie’s freedom to travel and live her own life, with Enzo as her ultimate soulmate.

The finale acknowledges that cost without making Bonnie’s life stop there: she goes forward, while the story keeps Enzo close in another form.
