Spoilers for all of Severance season one. Season two premiered January 17, 2025, and its ten episodes aired weekly through March 21, 2025. If you’re watching or revisiting it, the key to season one is that Lumon’s severance procedure creates two versions of a person—then the finale lets three of those “innies” briefly discover who they are outside work.

What is severance, and what is the team trying to do?

At Lumon Industries, severance surgically divides employees’ memories between their work and personal lives. As Apple’s official series description puts it, Mark Scout leads a team whose members have undergone a procedure that separates those memories. An employee’s “innie” remembers life inside Lumon; their “outie” remembers life outside it. Neither has the other’s experiences.

Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan work in Macrodata Refinement (MDR), sorting numbers whose purpose Lumon does not explain. Their supervisors include Harmony Cobel and Seth Milchick. The mystery is not only what the numbers mean, but what Lumon is doing to its employees and why.

Why did Petey matter to Mark?

Petey, Mark’s former MDR colleague, reappears after undergoing reintegration—an attempt to reconnect his innie and outie memories. His deteriorating condition and eventual death make the procedure’s risks immediate for Mark. Petey also gives Mark evidence that the divide Lumon presents as permanent can be challenged, bringing the outside resistance into Mark’s life.

How did the innies begin to resist?

Helly openly rejects the arrangement and tries to escape. Mark, despite his own uncertainty, works to build trust and organize his team. Irving forms a connection with Burt in Lumon’s Optics & Design department, disrupting the divisions between departments. Meanwhile, Ricken’s self-help book reaches the innies and offers an alternative to Lumon’s doctrine. Their growing solidarity and access to ideas beyond the company make a coordinated plan possible.

What is the Overtime Contingency?

The Overtime Contingency is a procedure that briefly wakes an innie in their outie’s surroundings, outside Lumon. Dylan stays behind to operate the switch, while Mark, Helly, and Irving get a short, precarious window to learn about their outside lives and tell people what is happening. The finale cuts between their discoveries as Milchick tries to stop the activation.

What happened to Helly, Irving, and Mark outside Lumon?

Helly discovers she is Helena Eagan

Helly wakes at a public event and learns that her outie is Helena Eagan, daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. Helena has publicly advocated for severance; her own innie’s opposition exposes a sharp conflict between the company’s public case for the procedure and the person living its consequences. When Helly gets a chance to speak, she denounces Lumon.

Irving finds Burt at home

Irving goes to Burt’s home and sees him with another man. It is a glimpse into Burt’s life beyond Lumon—and a painful counterpoint to the connection Irving’s innie had begun to form with him at work.

Mark recognizes Ms. Casey

Mark sees a photograph of his outie’s wife, Gemma, whom Mark believed to be dead. He recognizes her as Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor at Lumon. Before the Overtime Contingency ends, he manages to shout, “She’s alive.”

How does the finale end?

The innies’ escape is interrupted when Milchick reaches Dylan and the Overtime Contingency is cut off. Mark’s warning and Helly’s denunciation are left unfinished. The finale also reveals that Cobel’s outside identity is Mrs. Selvig, Mark’s neighbor. When innie Mark calls her “Ms. Cobel” outside Lumon, she realizes the innies are loose and tries to alert the company.
