The 1993 Super Mario Bros. film took Mario into a dark, dystopian science-fiction world, while the 2023 animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie was built around recognizable characters, settings and game references—with Nintendo directly involved in production. That helps explain why the newer adaptation feels more like the games to many fans. It does not settle whether it is the better film: faithfulness and storytelling are different measures.
Why the 1993 film felt so unlike the games
The original film was not simply a colorful Mario adventure translated into live action. It reimagined the premise as a dystopian crime-fantasy, a sharp departure from the bright, playful platform games. The Independent later described it as a loose adaptation whose murky look was difficult to reconcile with the games’ style. Rocky Morton, the film’s co-director, explained in a 2014 interview that the departure was intentional.
Morton said the filmmakers wanted to tell what they considered the “real story,” imagining the games as a distorted version of events in the movie. In his words: “The idea being that we were going to tell the real story, and that the game itself was a perversion of the original story, which the movie is”. For viewers expecting the games’ familiar fantasy, this inverted premise could feel less like an adaptation and more like a replacement.
That creative choice helps explain the film’s reputation among many viewers, but it does not establish that every fan disliked it. There is no representative survey in the cited material measuring how many fans rejected the film. Nor does the available evidence support treating every frequently repeated story about its production as settled fact; the documented point here is Morton’s stated creative intent.

How Nintendo’s role changed for the 2023 movie
The production arrangement was different. In a 2023 interview, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto contrasted Nintendo’s earlier decision to license the property for the 1993 film with its later aim to make movies itself by working with partners. The newer film was made with Illumination, with Miyamoto serving as a producer and contributing to story, characters and game references. Nintendo’s November 2023 investor-relations presentation called it the first movie in which the company was directly involved in production. Nintendo’s presentation and Miyamoto’s interview with Game Informer describe that shift.
Miyamoto also described the creative challenge as bringing Nintendo and Illumination’s creators together. Direct participation gave people responsible for the game world a seat in shaping its film version; it did not mean the film had to reproduce a game level by level.

A familiar world, designed for more than core fans
Miyamoto said the aim was to please core Mario fans while making the movie enjoyable for people who were not devoted players. The film drew references from multiple eras of the franchise. That balance helps account for its recognizable characters, environments, music and visual callbacks without requiring every viewer to know the games. Koji Kondo, the longtime Mario composer, served as a score consultant, according to the Game Informer interview.
There was also a storytelling adjustment: a game character often functions as an avatar controlled by the player, while a movie needs a protagonist who can carry a story. In an April 2023 Los Angeles Times interview, Illumination founder and co-producer Chris Meledandri said that making Mario relatable as the center of a film was an important adaptation challenge.

What changed—and what did not
| Comparison | 1993 film | 2023 film |
|---|---|---|
| Production relationship | Nintendo licensed the property for the movie, according to Miyamoto’s 2023 account. | Nintendo was directly involved in production with Illumination; Miyamoto was a producer. |
| Approach to the game world | Live-action dystopian crime-fantasy, conceived by its co-director as a darker reinterpretation. | Animated fantasy with recognizable game characters, settings and references. |
| Adaptation emphasis | An invented alternate backstory that recast the games as a distorted retelling. | References spanning multiple eras, while adapting Mario from player-controlled avatar to film protagonist. |
These differences help explain why a viewer might find the newer film more faithful. They do not prove it is stronger in every aspect of filmmaking. The Independent’s April 2023 review praised the new movie’s animation and game references but criticized its plot, dialogue and emotional throughlines. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Source fidelity, story, characterization and emotional effect are separate questions.

It is more accurate to say the 1993 film became notorious among many fans for departing from the games than to say all fans hated it. The available sources provide a director’s explanation of the creative choices and critics’ descriptions of the adaptation, not representative polling of fan opinion.

The Independent reported a 53% critics score and a 96% audience score for the 2023 film on Rotten Tomatoes in its April 2023 article. Those figures are a dated snapshot of a changing ratings page, not a current score or a lasting measure of what all fans think. They illustrate that critical and audience reactions can differ, but cannot by themselves explain why any individual viewer likes or dislikes either film.
