Hideo Kojima’s OD remains an unreleased horror project, not a game with a confirmed launch date. Its 2025 “Knock” video is a short teaser rather than a confirmed gameplay reveal; the latest update, shared by Xbox in September 2026, included behind-the-scenes performance-capture footage and a production-status report.
What is Hideo Kojima’s OD?
OD is a project from Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios, announced at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023. Kojima Productions described it as an exploration of “testing your fear threshold” that blurs the boundaries between gaming and film. Kojima Productions’ announcement also connected the project to Xbox cloud gaming technology, but did not establish how the finished game will be distributed or played.
The announcement named filmmaker Jordan Peele as one of several storytellers involved, and identified Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier as lead performers. It did not specify each person’s precise creative or performance role, so those credits should not be read as confirmation of particular characters or responsibilities.
What does the “Knock” teaser show?
The teaser was presented at Kojima Productions’ 10th-anniversary event in 2025. MobileSyrup reported that Lillis’s character lights candles in an empty room before a mysterious figure appears. That brief horror vignette gives viewers a sense of the project’s unsettling tone, but it does not establish that the scene is gameplay or that the full game uses a first-person perspective. MobileSyrup’s report on the teaser describes what appears in the video, not the game’s confirmed mechanics.

What was in the 2026 update?
On September 17, 2026, Xbox Wire reported that Kojima shared OD–KNOCK development news and behind-the-scenes performance-capture footage featuring Lillis and Schafer. The footage is a production update, not a newly announced release date or a full demonstration of how the game plays. Xbox Wire’s broadcast recap documents the footage and announcement.
GamesRadar reported that Kojima said performance capture and ADR, which had paused during the SAG strike, resumed in 2026 and that production was proceeding on schedule. He also described OD as “a completely new kind of game that tests the thresholds of fear.” This is a status report attributed to Kojima at that time; it is not a guarantee of when the game will be ready. GamesRadar’s report covers his comments.

Is OD an Xbox exclusive, and will it require cloud gaming?
Xbox’s June 2022 partnership announcement said Kojima Productions was working on a game that would leverage cloud technology, and the 2023 OD announcement reiterated the cloud-gaming connection. Those statements establish cloud technology as part of the project’s framing, but the reviewed announcements do not settle final platform availability or whether playing through the cloud will be mandatory. Xbox’s 2022 partnership announcement and the official OD announcement do not specify consumer requirements or a complete platform list.

No release date or release window is established in the reviewed announcements and reports. The September 2026 update says production was proceeding after performance capture and ADR resumed, but gives no launch timing. Final platforms, technical requirements and distribution details are also unconfirmed in those sources.
