What “As It Was” may mean
The title sets up a contrast between the present and an earlier state: things, relationships, or a person’s sense of self may no longer feel the way they once did. In an interview with Hits Radio on April 1, 2022, Styles described the album’s “house” idea as an inward journey: “During the process of the album it became much more of an internal journey of finding home and peace with one’s self.” That comment makes a reading of “As It Was” as a song about personal dislocation and adjustment plausible. It does not establish that every lyric has one intended meaning. The Hits Radio interview is the source for Styles’s comments.
Is the song about a specific person?
Relationship-specific explanations, including fan theories naming Olivia Wilde, have circulated, but the cited artist comments do not verify them. It is more accurate to describe those claims as speculation than to present any named person as the confirmed subject of the song. How Styles said the song developed
Styles told Hits Radio that “As It Was” was the last song he wrote for Harry’s House. He said it was written in a friend’s front room in the English countryside and began much slower than the finished track. The musical idea changed as the song took shape: “The piano line was being played on a piano, and then turned into that synth and it kind of took on a new life.”
That account offers a concrete way to hear the track’s transformation: an initial piano line became a synth part, while the early, slower idea evolved into the released arrangement. In a later interview published October 10, 2025, co-writer and producer Kid Harpoon said the synth sound used a Moog One preset called “Harpoon Dream,” with its delay removed. Sony Music Canada’s 2022 announcement documented physical editions of Harry’s House, including a Target Translucent Yellow vinyl and a Sea Glass Green vinyl offered through the artist’s webstore. Those details confirm that vinyl editions existed at the time; they do not establish current stock or availability by country.
